Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

The Prison South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Today was an interesting day. I was able to go to the prison to help out with the day care there. Marisol, a CCS coodinator works there everyday, but she was short staffed for the rest of the week so I went to help out. Before we entered, Marisol recognized two past inmates waiting outside with their child. They travled all night to wait outside the prison because they were witnesses of a murder. While she was speaking to them a little girl (probably 4 yrs.old) ran up to her to hug her. The little girl´s mom had been in prison [View Full Entry]

Greetings! It was more of the same yesterday (the 23rd of August) at the health clinic, vitals, vaccinations and injections. We did get two teenaged boys in who had blown something up with gasoline and had impact wounds on their bodies. One boy is very lucky, he took the brunt of the impact on the side of his neck and it scattered up the side of his face and head. The head nurse for the day was not the usual one, but she still let me help clean the boy’s wounds up. He kept thanking us and calling us momacita (that [View Full Entry]

Today was my last day at the orphanage. The day started in the kitchen, which as you know, I quite like. Then we played with the children. They have been playing that game with string that we use to play when we were kids...you know, the one where one person wraps the string around their hands and you grab certain parts of the string and transfer the string to you hands. It was a lot of fun. The kids have also learned to do a bit of macrame. They were making bracellets with twine(ish) material. I had the job of holding [View Full Entry]

Made it South America » Peru
Hi all, well made it over here in one piece, including my luggage, which was is always a good way to start a holiday. Spent a pretty average night in Santiago. The hotel was very cheap (less than $10) and I guess you get what you pay for - no towel, no toilet paper, no shower rose and I did wonder when the sheets were last washed. The weather was cloudy and a little rainy and so I wasn´t wanting to venture too much further to find a better alternative. Santiago doesn´t have much going for it. It´s pretty poor looking [View Full Entry]

Llama Healer South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Saturday morning a group of us were met at the house by Poncho, our guild, to go on a Llama trek. We all climbed into the van and drove for about two hours up into the Andean Sierras. Along the way we stopped and Poncho bought fresh trout from a trout farm for our lunch. When we arrived at out start location, a highlander was there with about fifteen llamas. They rounded the llamas up and tied most of our stuff to them. I only gave them a few things and kept my pack with me. Poncho had also arranged horses [View Full Entry]

Finally! South America » Peru » Ayacucho
Today at Santa Elena Health Clinic they worked my but off! They finally figured out that I have a medical back ground and put it to use. It felt really good to finally be doing some good with the people and not just the llama and puppy. I took vitals, lost count on how many vaccinations for yellow fever I gave, gave shots antibiotics in the butt, and wound care. They showed me how they chart and where to put my information. So I feel as if I’m getting their system down. The language barrier is still an issue, however, I [View Full Entry]

Muchos Llamas! South America » Peru » Ayacucho
I went on the llama trek this weekend that I have so been looking forward to. It was quite an experience! We drove two hours to the base of a mountain where we gathered our llamas and horses. We didn´t ride the llamas, but had the choice of riding the horses if we got tired. The llamas were there to carry our bags, and for ambiance I guess. The hike was only three miles, but with the altitude, it felt like much more. We went up to 14,500 feet, the highest I´ve ever experienced. It´s amazing how quickly you lose your [View Full Entry]
