Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

i apologise for the name, im scraping the barrel here Rich again, and this time weve been on a fantastic three day trek through Colca Canyon. At 1300 metres, this is the second deepest canyon in the world and twice as deep as the grand canyon. Suddenly that doesnt seem so grand! We started the trek with a descent into the canyon floor, where we spent out first night in a local hovel. The second day was a trek through the canyon floor to an oasis, which has been developed and features pools fed constantly by fresh spring water. Very cool. [View Full Entry]

Today at the clinic I got to assist with a delivery. Rebecca came with me to Santa Elena today and as soon as we walked in the door the Doctor told us to go to the delivery room. My roll was very small but at least I got to see how they do it with out drugs and I’ll tell ya right now you can count me out! The delivery tables are really old and leave no room for comfort for the mother. I held the girls leg in the stirrup and held her head up for her during her contractions. [View Full Entry]

well its been one adventure after another recently. Early to rise and we were on our way to the floating islands on Lake titicaca, most impresssive! The Islands actually float!! There are reeds packed together to form a base, and the roots of the reeds float hence keeping the island from sinking, the only thing keeping it in one place are stakes going directly through the island. The views from the island were lovely but unfortuantly the islands are so over comercialised it kind of spoils it, although we did get to buy some lovely lovely tourist goods!! After a while [View Full Entry]

Hola! Well it is All Saints Weekend down here. There has been festivities abound. Tomorrow is the actual holiday, so there will be no business conducted and just fiesta. We are going to go to the Wari ruins tomorrow morning. It should be interesting. The Wari was a civilization that predated the Inca and was at one time the largest city in the world, larger then Rome. Yesterday we spent a good portion of the day relaxing and then went into town. In the main plaza they had different schools competing to make these giant merles in the street. They were [View Full Entry]

August 29, 2005 It´s 5AM and we are in the Lima airport. In a foggy valium haze we manage to find info on a hostel and grab a cab to Miraflores. We go back to sleep for several hours. Maybe we should have split a valium?? When we finally walk downstairs there are 2 tour guides waiting for us in the lobby. Have they been here since we checked in 5 hours ago? We walk to the Brazilian Embassy to get my visa only to find out that they are closed for 2 days due to a local holiday. We are [View Full Entry]

Yesterday, Saturday the 27th, Rebecca and I went to help Lynn with the river clean up project. Lynn has been educating the children in the schools on the importance of clean water. She has give countless newspaper and T.V. interviews to help create public awareness on the importance of clean water. The river clean up was the worse experience I have had in Peru. I worked a 15´by 5´ swath of the river and collected ten bags of garbage in just over two hours. The rivers and any other open spaces are used as landfills. It is very disturbing that the [View Full Entry]

Well La Paz was great and everything, a little high but it was okay, great shopping and cheap as chips! But Itchy feet caught up with us so we packed up our things and got on a bus and ended up in Puno, Peru!! But our last few days in La Paz were very adventurous indeed.... Tiwanaku We finally gave in and decided to join a tour group, you know those annoying groups of people in North Face coats, bags, hats, gloves, underpants, who wear safari hats in the middle of the city, well we were one of those! Let me first start by telling you what a fabulous night we had last night. We had invited everyone in the house, including CCS staff and their spouses (this meant the drivers, coodinators, maids, and cooks). We wanted to properly say thanks for taking care of us for the past two weeks. They are so wonderful. It will really be difficult to say goodbye to them all tonight (we leave early tomorrow) So our pub crawl began with 8 or 9 people to start. We all had a cerveza at the restaurant that is connected to our building. Some had guitar [View Full Entry]
