Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

City of the Incas South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Well after 6 days and 4 buss journeys of 10 hours+ across the center of the Andes, ahh poor Sarah and Jason I hear you all cry... We have finally landed in Cusco to check out the center of the old Inca Empire. The town is one of the more beautiful places we have stayed, but also one where you get hassled the most. The city is considered to be the longest inhabited locations in all of South America. The Spaniards built directly on top of the old Inca city, and this has made for the most interesting colonial architecture centers [View Full Entry]

Last Days in Peru South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
So my last day in Cusco was Saturday the 10th. I slept in till 8am, lounged around the hostel drinking coffee and catching up on e-mails. My main focus for the day was to walk around exploring Cusco and buying a gift or two for my mom. I spent most of the day wandering in and out of shops in the San Blass district. I found some lovely shops; one of my favorites was a chocolate shop that made chocolate out of coca leaves. The use of the coca leaves has been part of the Peruvian society since the beginning of [View Full Entry]

Peru!! South America » Peru
Another mammoth 24 hour journey brought us to Peru, the border crossing was pretty cool, in an old North American gas guzzling tank! Peru is an amazing country, one weīve both been really looking forward to, some strange customs we had to quickly get used to, beggars use buses to give you their story then give everyone a handful of sweets and collect money afterwards, on the same bus journey, we wondered why it took the local women an hour to get dressed in about 5 layers of clothing before they got on the bus, we soon found out why, the [View Full Entry]

Better late then never! My last day in Peru did not go as planed therefor I am late with the Machu Picchu update, I beg your forgiveness. So Thursday (the 8th) we arrived in to Aqua Caliente in the late afternoon. Freddy, our guide, got everyone squared up at their hotels and showed us were to meet for dinner. I was the only one staying at my hotel out of our group. The hotel sat partway up the hill and had a nice view, however, no hot water and to think the name of the town means hot water, go figure! September 9, 2005 We take a 9 hour bus to Puno from Cusco which wasnīt as painful as it sounds as we stopped 5 times to see ruins, have lunch and of course, shop. Another cool bus crowd so we chatted the time away. One of the girls traveling with us today went to school with Danīs cousin in Chicago. Small world. Her and her mother are on their last few days of vacation so they give us their stash of snacks. I canīt tell you how good the single packets of crystal light taste after having nothing but coke light [View Full Entry]

Trekking South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
We started our trek off really early in the morning on Monday the 5th. We had a very interesting buss ride to a small town called Cruzpata. The buss went off the paved road and put her into low drive to chug it’s way up a switchbacky hill/mountain. In Cruzpata we collected our backpacks and climbed into the back of a truck that took us farther up the hill. There we had a small breakfast before we started the trek. Plans had changed over night for our trek and our group was now nine people, the three originals, me, Evi and [View Full Entry]

In the Jungle South America » Peru
Pucallpa is a large sprawling city of about 300,000 people. The roads are bursting with rickshaws, and a ride through the city feels exactly like a game of MarioKart - except there are no Princess drivers; all are men. There are very few tourists in Pucallpa, the one and only draw (for your average tourist) being the fresh water dolphins in Lake Yarinacocha. Indeed, a tourist cannot find a map; one day we spent five hours going to city hall, the police station, bookstores, Western Union, tour operators, and other government buildings, but no map existed. I donīt know how anyone [View Full Entry]

Me...

Yeah okay I fell off a horse. Not far though, and I was trying to get off. After our adventures in Machu Picchu last blog, we decided to try out the wonders of Incan hub, Cusco. The 4 hour train ride back from Aguas Calientes was a shocker - it was so unbearably hot leaving at 4pm. Some boy started having hallucinations and sobbing, though laura said he was just a drama queen. Anyway, back in Cusco we went and signed up for a horseback tour through some local ruins on the first day, white water rafting on the second, and [View Full Entry]
