Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

To the Top South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
From Aguas Calientes, one takes a bus up to the ruins. Itīs best to go early when there are fewer tourists. The ride is 30 minutes and follows a zig-zag path to the top of a steep cliff. There is a hotel and restaurant at the base of the ruins, and from here it is a short walk to beautiful vistas and unbelievable ancient construction work. At the top of that famous peak behind Maccu Picchu are more ruins, called Huayna Picchu. Itīs possible to climb to the top, but when I first looked I thought, "How do you get up [View Full Entry]

Escuela En Arequipa! South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa
I am writing this to you from the great city of Arequipa in Peru. The weather in the day at about 2500m is bloody hot and the main Plaza de Armas is a beautiful place. OK so enough of all that! Arequipa is also the place for eating Cuy, Guinea Pig to you and I, seeing frozen dead people, and throwing up at 4910m (just over 1600ft!). The gory details to come I promise! Still with the Gerrrrrrmans (I canīt remember the name of the witty liverpudlian comic who coined that one), we arrived in Arequipa on Saturday 24th. We stayed [View Full Entry]

Three For the Price of One. South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca
OK, to make things easier for us all this one covers a few places and a few days where I shot around pretty quickly, taking it all in. Pisco: The first stop after Lima was Pisco. On the way down I met a couple of Germans on the bus who became my travel companions for the next week or so. Hi to Sandra and Sonja! I had been told that the buses in Peru are a little more unreliable and this proved to be true when we stopped in a tiny village whilst the bus was fitted with what I think [View Full Entry]

A Brief Delay South America » Peru
The busride back to Lima was relatively smooth. This time, as on the way there, no rifle-carrying military gaurd boarded to tell us there was narcotics activity in the area, and that the bus needed protection. It was eighteen hours back to Lima, had a cup of Nescafe and an egg sandwhich, and boarded another bus to Cusco. Fifteen hours later the bus had to stop. Some local citizens had blocked off the road with concrete and rocks; they were protesting that none of the money from the toll station benefitted the town. Instead it went to fund mining projects by [View Full Entry]

The Roadblock Up Ahead
Negotiations
Spectators

A strike in Cusco meant that Cynthias car was pelted with stones as she left the airport at Cusco on her journey to the hotel. All taxis were banned and no one was able to leave or enter Cusco. Including us who had tracked down a loco taxi driver who took up the challenge of taking us to Tipon. It was not to be. Every road out of Cusco was blocked with either boulders, people or rubbish. The advantage was that it allowed us to get a ticket to Macchu Picchu on one of the busiest weeks and see Macchu Picchu [View Full Entry]

Riverbound South America » Peru
The next day we loaded onto a river cargo ship for Contamana, a small village two days north on the Ucayali River. The first and 3rd floors hold cargo like toiletpaper and wood planks, and the other cargo - people - are kept on the middle floor. It is a chaotic, completely cramped space; people buy hammocks and hang them across both havles of the ship. There is no room whatsoever to walk, so the horde of vendors selling worthless crap and all of the others trying to find a space for their hammock constantly bump you. The river port was [View Full Entry]
