Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Arriving in Lima two days before our tour started gave us time to explore Lima with Jason, Katheryn and Cynthia before they flew home. We celebrated Ella's birthday in style at the Rosa Nautica, a top class restaurant situated at the end of a beautiful pier on the seafront, with the waves crashing around below us as we ate. We enjoyed cocktails and gorgeous local fish and although it was pricey by Peruīs standards at around 25 pounds a head, it was well worth it. The next day we explored the city and took a taxi to a pottery museum in [View Full Entry]

Lots has happened - We had to avoid the lesbians in Arequipa who were instant on wanting to take us home!!!??, stayed at a Peruvian concentration camp where you are woken at 5.30 in the morning!, we chilled in the thermal springs of Chivay, saw Condors & the worlds deepest canyon and in between we all got very drunk...When Iīve sourced the pics iīll write a proper update! :-) Alex is currently walking the Inca trail (with no facilities!, she had to leave her hair straighteners in the hotel!) and Iīm on a week long Spanish course. 4 hours a day [View Full Entry]

"Oh no not more tourists!"
Local children coming to see the tourists

Someone recommended a 3 day white-water rafting adventure on the Rio Apurimac - apparently one of the top ten rafting rivers in the world, a few hours away from Cusco on a bumpy unsealed road. I foolishly thoughly this would be a great idea, and after a day in Cusco after the Inca Trail I was off for more physical exertion (much more than I expected) and more than my faire share of adrenaline. Class 5 rapids are a scary place to flip your boat and go for a swim. Day one we started of learning the basics and flipped the [View Full Entry]

Cusco is known as both the Inca capital of Peru...and the Gringo capital. I remarked to someone that it reminds me of Italy, not only for the cobble stone streets and red tiled roofs, but for the hordes of tourists at every corner. But, this means that accomodations are a bit more comfortable and that you can get pizza for dinner anywhere. I havenīt had pizza yet, instead I usually eat 1/4 of a rotisserie chicken and french fries for $1.50. It also means that they exploit the Inca name beyond belief. Guess what I had for breakfast this morning?...Inca Granola, [View Full Entry]

This was a while ago now - I started the Inca Trail a few days after my last blog entry, on September 19th, still suffering from the remenants of food poisoning but keen to get on with it. I turned up to the briefing the night before only to be told that we were leaving that night as there were bus strikes planned for the next day (typical South American answer to anything is to have a good old protest), so had to pack very quickly and spent the night sleeping on a football pitch near the trailhead. The first day [View Full Entry]

Floating at 3820m South America » Peru » Puno
After a great time in Chile except for one incident with a vanishing bag, we headed to Peru. We had booked a bus ticket from Tacna, which is just inside the Peruvian border to Puno, a small port on the edge of lake Titicaca. First we had to get to Tacna via a 'colectivo', which is a big old american car which would have looked at home being driven by Huggy Bear on the set of Starsky & Hutch. The Colectivo waits until it has enough people and then sets off accross the border. We were lucky to avoid the waiting [View Full Entry]

Dedinka na Amazonke

We had an interesing last 2 days in Lima. We got up at the crack of dawn and got a taxi to the airport, only to find that our ticket had the wrong time printed on and the flight to Iquitos had already left! We had previously called the airline to try and reconfirm the flights but were told that it wasnīt neccessary. Anyway, they said we could get the later flight at 4pm (bearing in mind itīs now 6am) so we had a long, long wait in Lima airport, spending our time reading, playing pocket draughts (Guy is the current [View Full Entry]

From Aguas Calientes, one takes a bus up to the ruins. Itīs best to go early when there are fewer tourists. The ride is 30 minutes and follows a zig-zag path to the top of a steep cliff. There is a hotel and restaurant at the base of the ruins, and from here it is a short walk to beautiful vistas and unbelievable ancient construction work. At the top of that famous peak behind Maccu Picchu are more ruins, called Huayna Picchu. Itīs possible to climb to the top, but when I first looked I thought, "How do you get up [View Full Entry]
