Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Ladies of Uros - the floating reed islands
Hello Darlings, Greetings from Puno (where?) - on the shores of lake Titicaca - the world's highest navigable lake (though no-one seems to be entirely sure what that means!!!). And this is our last day in Peru! We had a final day in Cusco and they were having a big festival. This consisted of lots of people marching each group accompanied by their band. Pretty much everyone in Cusco seemed to be taking part: the nurses paraded, the lawyers, the accountants. the building workers and auxiliary trades, the young Israelis, various saints, virgins and churches were represented . . . . Ian and Misti

Cusco itself is crowded, overpriced and absolutely rammed full of tourists.... no wonder it is overpriced as the locals have cottoned on to the fact that the many rich americans that come here can pay much more than they're used to. Unfortunately this has led to more street hawking than I've seen anywhere else in both Ecuador and Peru. You can't walk two steps without being offered the same hats, paintings, wooden carvings, massages and many more things that I really do not need, yet the locals insist I do! Thus we havn't had the best time in Cusco, the only [View Full Entry]

Cusco is a wonderful, vibrant and historic city. In all measures it stands tall. It is also extremely touristy, and I mean extremely. If Machu Picchu was an amusement park, then Cusco is surely a circus. We had to come here though, so much of Peru’s history is wrapped up in this city. Cusco was, after all, the heartland of the Inca empire, and to them the navel of the world. Being here however, has turned out to be a bit of an endurance test. There are only so many times a day someone can ask you if you want a [View Full Entry]

The plan was to set out at 7 am. Jeff, the owner of the closest thing to a biker bar in Cuzco, had given me on the scoop on the back door entrance to The Citadel. Follow the route to Santa Maria via Oyantantambo and turn left. Follow that road to its end at the hydroelectric plant, and walk from there. Simple. Of course, my seven o'clock start became an 8 o'clock start before I left the bar because I had much to discuss with Ken and Carol, two aussies that have been doing laps around the world on their BMW [View Full Entry]

Juuri tällaisia maisemia lapset piirtävät, kun he kuvittelevat sadut tosiksi. Inka trail tai pikemmin Camino Ink [View Full Entry]

26th October South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
Part of me never wanted to come to Machu Picchu. A bigger part did. So today, we are now atop South America's most iconic historical monument. Those superb pictures of this mountain top city, surrounded by cloud forest dropping away rapidly to the valleys below, could hardly be more stunning. Being here though, tipping down with rain, crammed with other tourists in their brightly coloured ponchos, takes the magic away somehow. I feel like I'm in an amusement park, being separated from my money at every opportunity. We arrived yesterday in fact, a better day than today with brightly lit s [View Full Entry]

This past weekend I went on a huge trip with some of my best friends! It started by taking a 16-hour bus from Lima to Arequipa, this big beautiful city in the south. Arequipa is called the White City because so much of it is made of this white volcanic rock from the nearby volcano, Misti. The city has a completely different feeling than any of the other cities I’ve been to in Peru. It is way more European with colonial-style buildings. The main plaza was absolutely spectacular. One of my friends we went with knew someone there (it was her [View Full Entry]

Nazca/Ica South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina
Hello all! Two weekends ago I went on a great little trip to Nazca and Ica! They are to the South of Lima and in a more desert climate. We started by taking a bus down to Nazca, about 6 hours away. We woke up early to see the Nazca lines. We rode in this little tiny airplane that flew over some of the famous ones. It was so neat! My favorite was the Condor. No one is exactly sure who made the Nazca lines (some think aliens, others think the Nazca people) or how, which adds a little bit to [View Full Entry]

We did it! South America » Peru » Cusco » Salkantay Trail
After 4 days, 30 miles (walking), 15,250 feet, one glacial mountain pass, high jungles, hot springs, some rain, and lots of mosquitos, Lauren and I finally made it to Machu Picchu! To say the Salkantay trek was difficult is an understatement but it was certainly fun and rewarding! Cannot wait to fill everyone in on the details. Sorry I have been a blogtard lately... We have been at Dharma’s and Ananthy’s house in Lima, Peru since Saturday. They live in a very nice area called Miraflores just a few blocks from the Ocean. We met Ananthy and Dharma in Delhi a few years ago. They are both from the USA. Dharma is an English teacher and he was working at the American School in Delhi before moving to the American School in Peru this summer. Ananthy works for the World Bank creating HIV social responsibility programs for corporate debtors. Talking with these two about moving to Peru reminded us of what it was like moving [View Full Entry]
