Hola... Well good news, I was finally able to claw my way out of the Amazon Basin, 2 hours up into the foothills of Peru´s Northern Highlands in the city of Taropoto. I definitely got my fill of the jungle... whether it was swimming in a tributary of the amazon with pink dolphins, playing soccer with native children in an isolated village of 200, salsa dancing with a prostitute in a bar during a torrential downpour, waking up to find a disturbingly large spider laying dead on my mosquito net, or seeing mosquitos bite through 98% deet repellent. Alas, luxury (it´s relative) will ensue. Oh, how I have missed regular showers, fresh meals besides rice with river rish, and efficient transportation. The main form of transportation in the Amazon is boats, which are painfully slow (days ... read more

To David Skinner, the road from Tarapoto to Yurimaguas really is not bad, yes there were land slides, mud, rain, all that good stuff that makes the old saying "its the journey not the destination" true to the core. I can only highly recommend it, some say its for the adventurist, but when you see old men like me in a taxi going through the mud, etc. anyone can do it. Now to qualify this, I must say that I am traveling with my friend from Iquitos, he met me in Lima 2.14.08 and we are putting the last few pieces together for forming a tour company, the name is Curuhuinsi Eco Adventure Tours & Expeditions located in Iquitos, you can contact Gerson Pizango, my partner, at (51) (065) 9940011, email: alexander.pizango@gmail.com. Had the decision made for us to go to Yurimaguas today, Sunday, as on Monday the road from Tarapoto to Yurimaguas will closed for 18 hours mas o manos due to construction, rock slides and all that other good stuff traveling is made of. I had read many accounts of travel on this road, however, they do not live up to those stories, minimum of 10 times worse in some peoples opinion. But what a trip into the mountains, over the mountains, down the mountains. Once in Iquitos maybe I can find a better internet cafe to upload photos. Shaun, the road from Mae Hong Song to Chiang Mae is like traveling on the highway along Turnagain Arm. You would have enjoyed some of the construction activity, or not. Not up to your engineering standards in ... read more

Trujillo wasn't the most exciting place, but went to look at Chan Chan a massive city built out of mud (chimu people, before the inca's). Got the bus to Tarapoto at 3pm, and spent 16hrs bashing from one side of my seat to the other, windy roads/crazy driver! Another night bus journey though so couldn't see any impending accidents. Slept quite soundly though. Arrived in Tarapoto about 8am, such an amazing place. So hot and sticky. Got a mototaxi, loads of fun, up to our hostal we picked out the guide book. Turned out to be an amazing place! Most expensive so far but we do have a twin room with tv and shower! Luxuries compared with the last two nights on buses!Watched the Ireland rugby game (Canice is an avid fan!), was rubbish, with a ... read more

We next traveled west by boat from Iquitos to Yurimaguas (60'soles, travel time: 2.5 days). The boat ride was typical with no unusual excitement.....a lot of people crammed into a small space with hammocks hanging everywhere like a can of sardines. The views were lush and green, with many sightings of river dolphins. After arriving at Yurimaguas we found that there was a city protest and everything was closed and nobody was working, not even the motocaros, so walking everywhere was the only option. We wanted to get on a bus to Tarapoto ASAP, however, we ended up finding a room (10 soles) and waiting until 2am to depart. The bus company was new TARAPOTO TOURS and had absolutely excellent service and price (yurimaguas to tarapoto: 10 soles, travel time: 4 hours). Tarapoto is a ... read more

After nearly one year, several lifetimes, jungle adventures, living with Shipibos near Pucallpa, buying a small piece of land and living on a yucca and banana farm,...and drinking about 1 gallon of ayahuasca over a period of 10 months, I am going back to America. I would like to share my experience with those of you who happen upon this blog.... to perhaps awaken you to the hidden power both you and I share. I understand that each reader is coming from within a different world, with a different version of reality, as we each create our reality based on our individual choices, decisions, and beliefs. Having everyone fully understand what I am going to write is my challenge. Perhaps this is where language fails us. Language is based on our interpretations, and are not ... read more
