I´ve just been on the most amazing and utterly decadent train ride. I left Cusco this morning on the Andean Explorer which I think is owned by / linked to Orient Express. It was lovely! I had my own armchair and table with a lamp and flowers. 3 course lunch, afternoon tea and Pisco Sour (Peruvian-blow-your-head-off drink) included. At the back of the train is the lounge and the observation car which is open to the elements at the back so yet again I´ve taken many hundreds of photos of the changing scenery over the 10 hour journey. Actually I can´t believe it´s been 10 hours, it just flew. I wonder if I can get back to the UK on one of these things?! OK so it´s not entirely in the spirit of backpacker travel but ... read more

Hola! Well this is our last couple of days in Peru so I thought I´d write a quick final blog before we head into Bolivia. After recovering from the Inca Trail we headed to Puno and hopped on a boat on Lake Titicaca. The lake is the highest navigable lake in the world at 3800m and is pretty big being approx. 90 by 40 miles and is shared by both Peru and Bolivia. We stopped at some floating islands which are made of reeds and were pretty cool and the families just float about on them making stuff out of reeds to sell to tourists. There started off being about 12 islands but then due to bust ups they chopped bits off and floated away and now there is about 30 islands! Easy way to get ... read more

Sorry for such a long entry guys but it was hard to break it down! We headed to Puno early Monday morning from Colca Canyon. We drove through the 5000m area again but this time I was much better, I think after all the walking and spening two days at altitude I had aclimatised. We arrived in Puno about lunch time had some food and milled around for a bit. We went to a rock and reggae bar in the evening for some 2 for 1 Pisco sours!! Im definately beginning to like them now! Theres a huge strike on in Peru on the 9th July, its all to do with the prices increasing and taxes, the usual things really! Only it could cause problems for us getting out of Puno to head to Cuzco. Having arrived in Puno yesterday, i've had an eventful 24hrs. I went out for a few drinks last night, with some people I had met. That was fine ,but when I stumbled back to my hotel I found that the place had been locked up, and there was not a sole in sight. It was only the appearance of couple of inebriated locals that saved the day, by starting to throw things at the windows - this seemed to do the trick, and I finally got to my room and bed. No more than 3-4 hours sleep later and I had to get up( with a very sore head, after one or two too many Pisco Sours!) to go on a boat trip to the floating Islands - Just what I needed!!! The trip was quite ... read more

¡Hola! I am writing this without the benefits of my notes, so please forgive me if I have to add stuff later. Day 8 we got up and had breakfast at the hotel (in the place that I can't remember the actual name of) including some coca tea (once you get into the highlands, coca leaves are pretty much set at the tables in the hotels like salt and pepper). We hopped back on the bus with George and Erica, and headed back through Chivay, where we dropped Erica off. We travelled for about 5 hours, through the highlands. We watched two movies, and I slept the rest of the way to Puno. I did look out the window a few times, but it was pretty much the same as before, lots of hilly, rocky, barren ... read more

Kate - We did another overnight journey to get to our next destination Puno where the famous Lake Titicaca lies. The journey was probably our worst yet!! I think we knew it was going to be a killer when we were the only ´gringos´ on the bus and every Peruvian that got on the bus was carrying at least 2-3 blankets with them and we we didnt even have our jackets on. Needless to say the 7 hour journey was FREEZING!!!! We managed to huddle together and get a little sleep- i think it helped that we were so exhausted from out 4 day trek but it was definitely a long night. It didnt get much better when we arrived in Puno at 5.30 in the morning. I think it was only about 3 degrees and ... read more
