Dienstag, 20.

I travelled to Puno on the shore of Lago Titicaca with the three Welsh girls I met in Arequipa, Jess, Leanne and Rhian, and an English guy called Ben. We stayed at The Point hostel. After arriving we went straight into town as we only had two days to see the city and the lake. We visited the Cathedral, very similar to most of the others I have seen in Peru - very big and very ornate. We saw a baptism taking place, I am not sure we were meant to be in there! We then went for food and found an excellent restaurant which offered us the set menu for 15 soles each with a free drink, and I think we all chose Lomo Saltado, which is an excellent local dish with spicy meat, rice ... read more

Another long and enjoyable day......... Im in my comfortable room in the Casa Andina Puno sending you my last blog for a few days. I was up at 5am this morning and bade my sad farewell to Cuzco in the cold and damp rain I have really enjoyed the hopitality of this town. The bus that I was on was the very plush Inka Express. It was to be a 10 hour journey so I wasnt really looking forward to it, but we stopped in 5 different locations which broke the journey up nicely. I would recommend this company to anyone wishing to do a similar trip. There was a plentiful supply of coffee, tea or coca tea ( which I am getting a real taste for......unfortunately its illegal anywhere else on the planet, except Bolivia I think ... read more

In Cuzco, unsurprisingly, there is Inca stonework at every turn. Lots of the Inca foundations have Spanish colonial buildings built on top of them. My favourite is the Quorikancha - it was the main Inca temple. When the Spanish arrived it was covered in gold and silver, including 700 gold panels weighing 2kg each and a field of maize with stems made from silver and corn cobs made from gold. The Conquistadores stripped it of all the gold and silver (which they melted down and sent to Spain) and built the church of Santa Domingo on top of it. In the subsequent earthquakes the Spanish church fell down whilst the Inca walls remained, more or less, intact. It's the same with the religious art. The locals always portray the Virgin Mary in a cloak spread out ... read more

Another successful border crossing and i made it to Peru. A little town on the other side of Lake Titicaca called Puno, nowhere near as nice as Copacabana, but a good place to start Peru. After checking in we found a local pool hall and had a few games, same stupid tables so we didn't bother for long. Had a good walk around the City and noticed a really cool looking Football Stadium. It looked really old and looked to be made out of stone, had a real coliseam feeling to it. Again, we were able to stroll in, no questions asked. It was a great pitch, 4th Generation Astro, i was dying to find a ball for a kick about, but no joy. In the afternoon we ate at the most recommended place in Puno, ... read more

So following on from the last blog we were in Copacabana trying to escape into Peru. With no true bus station in Copacabana we had been told to go back to the the office where we bought our tickets. On getting there the woman pointed up the street and told us to find the Panamericano bus. It ended up that we had a long walk up to the top of the hill with our bags we were not impressed as if she had told us where we were going we would have gotten the hostel bus to drop us off. Anyway on arrival at the bus chaos reigned and we were told that there was not enough room on the bus but to get into a collectivo. We got shepherded into a collectivo along with other ... read more

So it seems as though trouble seems to follow me everywhere, the whole point of going to Lima was to avoid the road blocks, but it looks as though I didn´t get the memo. Truth be told, the day that I bought my ticket to Nazca, the road blocks were actually over, so I could have avoided the whole trip west and avoided the expensive flight more importantly. Well, I arrived in to Juliaca and found a quick cheap bus to Puno. I arrived in Puno and found a room as recommended by Lonely Planey and was swiftly taken to my room, shown the toilet etc. No cost was discussed about how much my room was going to cost (it was about 11pm at night and the brain wasn´t at it´s peak performance). Well I slept ... read more

Hello Everyone from Tessa: Sorry about the break in writing but the internet at our hostel in Arequipa was always being used by someone else and it takes a long time to upload the photos so we haven´t been able to update regularly. On our last day in Lima. We walked down the Pacific Coastline from Barranco to Miraflores. Walking the waves, which were very cold, we were able to watch the local surfers and check out all the rocks and shells on the beach with Anna and Justine. We made it back to our hostel at about 3:00 and caught the bus to Arequipa. A 17 hours long bus. However, Cruz Del Sur did not disappoint! We upgraded our tickets to the Cruzero Suite and were definitely grateful for it. The seat reclined almost entirely, ... read more

Tim Version: * Made the now very long ridiculus trek to Puno. * Saw the Floating Islands and other sights of Puno, but unfortunately got stuck 3 more days by more blockades... The "Why are these protests and blockades following me!!" version: Puno, it's taken a bit of a mission to get here but I finally arrived. Instead of the direct 6 hour bus ride from Cusco, due to the strikes I had to go from Cusco to Nazca overnight then the next night on to Arequipa and then from there finally to Puno. The bus ride to Nazca, urgh, not a good one! We had a seriously fast driver and it is nothing but corners so no sleep was found on that one but instead I had a full day to kill in Nazca which ... read more
