So, does this bus have air conditioning - asked the portly elderly woman, accompanied by three of her peers as they got on the bus at the airport in Puerto Maldonado...
So started the venture for those suspecting the trip into the peruvian amazon would be a quaint get away - much like gilligan and crew - a three hour tour turned into a day from hell for the four ladies - after a two hour canoe ride downstream to the ecoamazonian lodge - the eight of us were taken to our huts, which much to the consternation and dismay of the travelling cuartet had neither electricity, nor phone, nor - well.... put it this way, it had a bed, mosquito netting and an inside WC with running cold water (no mam, no hot water). Needless to say, but i will - the ladies venture was short lived, as they bitterly complained to the poor manager about the appaling conditions of the amazon rainforest -
considering we are 30km south of puerto maldonado, 2 hours by boat to bolivia, and five hours by boat to brazil - yeah, we are definately not in kansas anymore (wizzard of ozz connotation)

My first encounter with the amazon was in the high amazon - 200ft above where i was today - a summer camp for a week. i found it incredible, and irresistible then, and even moreso now. at that point in time, i was 13, had long blond hair, and was approched by a native child wanting to touch my hair - as she had not seen a white man before
my second encounter with the amazon was with my dad, and we flew into the heart of the amazon jungle - iquitos on the amazon river, and then took a private plane and landed on the corrientes river - one of the first white men
today, the white man has done what he does best - rape, pillage and burn or consume. the river had vague notes of his presence - or the presence of the decendant of the spainiards or other europeans - tis is the largest protected rainforest in the world - peru has 84 of the 104 identified biodiveristy zones - i experienced four during this trip

pon my first encounter with the amazon jungle, i knew my life would never be the same - upon my scond encounter, i never thought i would be able to see anything like it again - a once in a lifetime experience - this time, it was another once in a lifetime - except, it was my second in a lifetime -
within 10 years, the brazilians will have constructed a trans american - trans amazon highway, providing a link from the pacific to the atlantic - this world will never be the same - progress comes at too high of a cost, at least that is the way i see it
the amazon will forever be part of me, and part of me has been left behind in the amazon
i value certain things more than any amount of money in the world -
