Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Funket mye bedre. Virkelig kult! [View Full Entry]

Arrival - Day Zero Its strange to think that this is the first overseas trip that I am really doing by myself. Every other time that I have travelled outside of Australia, it has been with spouse and when the children were at home, them as well. In the middle of the night last night, I arrived at Lima airport, and about 90 minutes later was getting out of the airport bus at this hotel. Tomorrow I join a Kumuka tour, and will overland over the next 20 days, ending up in Quito. Lisa, the tour guide, has rung and made [View Full Entry]

Into the day… Surrounding the ‘pizza street’ are what appears to be an ocean of bodies/ all young, dark and beautiful. Walk down the street and on your left are lovely dark skinned young women soliciting business… not for sex, but for me to come into the perspective restaurant and have dinner. The activity got heavy in Miraflores at about ten at night, and went until about four in the morning. I know this because the window of my hostel * USD$25 per room* faces the street and I could hear the buzz of the youth and traffic before I passed [View Full Entry]

Christmas Eve in Lima South America » Peru » Lima
Hotel: Sol Melia (Lima, Peru) $59 We had arrived at the hotel by 8:30 AM, we went and had breakfast while they checked us in. The breakfast buffet was quite impressive, with the usual American offerings, along with tamales and lots of tropical fruit. We slept again for a few hours before heading out for lunch. It was Christmas Eve, so many of the museums and other sights were closed, although many of the shops and restaurants were still open. The hotel recommended Jose Antonio restaurant (http://www.joseantonio.com.pe), a short walk from the hotel. The food was outstanding Peruvian cre [View Full Entry]

Gardens in Miraflores
Gardens in Miraflores
The flowerbeds in Miraflores are so colourful, and it´s even better when the sun's out.
It's felt like ages since I last wrote but I guess that's just because so much has been happening. Right now we are in Nasca waiting for our overnight bus tonight to Arequipa, so I have a bit of a chance to write. I´m sorry if this is the first journal that you´ve got or you don´t get this one. I´m just adding addresses as I am able. We spent 2 whole days in Lima, mainly in a seaside suburb called Miraflores. It's pretty flash by local standards, but most tourists stay there because it's much safer than the rest of [View Full Entry]

Hi all, this is the first propper entry that I´ve made, so it may not go that smoothly, but bear with me, it´ll get better. The flight over from Aus was pretty good. Long, but good. I think it was about 35hrs all up, and we were glad to see the hotel in Miraflores, Lima for more than just one reason. Once we had cleared immigration and customs,(customs by the way consisted of handing a form to guy who obviously had no intention of searching anyone´s bags and looked like he just wanted to get everyone through so he could go [View Full Entry]

Larco Mar - Lima
This is like the ritzy part of Lima, it's the beach section of Miraflores where all the rich people hang out.
Well Lima was nice, a bit expensive but really quite a cool city. I was planning on doing a bit of Para-sailing and swimming at the beach while I was here but the weather has been a bit cold so that'll have to wait untill I'm a bit closer to the equator. Meanwhile I'm off up to Huaras tonight and plan on draging out my tent for a couple of days camping - but apparantly it's been snowing up there in the national park over the last couple of days so we'll see about that too. Hope everyones good back home, [View Full Entry]
