Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Saturday, July 9, 2005 This morning we woke up, and guess what? I was COLD! I donīt think itīs the temperature, really, but perhaps the environment. Itīs gray, and dull, and humid. I have never been to Lima any other time of year, but I think this is just what winter is like here. There was no hot water this morning, so getting ready for the day was no fun! We were rushed, and had little time for breakfast (only one piece of bread!) and 2 sips of coffee. We had to get up somewhat early as today Memo was baptizing [View Full Entry]

Thursday, July 7 - Friday, July 8, 2005 We arrived yesterday and I already have so much to say that I canīt believe itīs only been 24 hours! I MUST start this blog by saying that our plane trip to Lima was the best one ever! We flew out of Miami at 1pm on Thursday, July 7 on Delta and we changed planes in Atlanta. Deltaīs services were phenomenal and we were really impressed. We arrived in Lima right on time at 10:30PM, Peruvian time (weīre an hour ahead in Florida). At once we could tell how much more modern the [View Full Entry]

Awake at 10:00 AM, finally a decent hour. Today is Plaza del Mayor and Museum day!! We grab a ride to Lima Central to explore the inner city, seems quite nice, the central plaza was grand with the fantastic looming architectures of the Placio Municipal and Catedral de Lima. The statue of Fransisco Pizzaro (Spanish Conquistador and Inca Inhalator) which once stood in the square was apparently removed in 2003, its current location is unknown. On strong recommendation we visited the Convent of San Fransisco, this magnificent structure contained a multitude of fantastic sights, from the [View Full Entry]

Who stole the sun?? South America » Peru » Lima
The biggest difference between Lima and the rest of the places we've visited is the lack of sunshine and clear blue sky! Located on the coast, Lima is shrouded by a melancholy coastal fog. But at least it doesn't rain, and it is fairly warm although the locals seem to think I look out of place in shorts and t-shirt. Just one day here, so we headed into central Lima from our hostel in Miraflores, and wandered about the pedestrian st between plaza de Armas and Plaza San Martin. It's lined with shops, food places and old buildings. We also visited [View Full Entry]

Getting ready to go South America » Peru » Lima
Hi everyone, Podz and I are getting ready to go - we are busy packing and are hoping that everything will fit in our bags and not weigh too much. Check in every now and then to see where we are and what we have been up to - although we will hopefully not be spending all our time in internet cafes. [View Full Entry]

Ok, we have not encountered any strangle muggers. However, our guidebook talks all about them (for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, a strangle mugger strangles his victim to unconsciousness and then steals money and valuables). Itīs kinda been a running morbid joke since weīve been in Lima. Lima has a reputation of not being the safest place. We had heard lots of stories before we arrived about evil taxi drivers, bag slashers, strangle muggers, etc. But everything has been peachy since we got here. Granted, we are staying in the nice neighborhood of Miraflores and havenīt seen [View Full Entry]

Journey South America » Peru » Lima
It was Helenīs idea that I do this travelblog thingy. I found this website pretty easily. All I needed to set it up was an email address, a name and a nickname. First two I already have, but I donīt think anyone really calls me by a nickname anymore. Iīve had to resort to the name which the boys in my class at All Hallows referred to me by amongst themselves when we were about 13-15: Beamish. It refers to my forehead, which used to be a bit shiny for some reason - must have been a teenage thing. You could [View Full Entry]

We finally made it! The flight was long, very long. We both got only a few hours of sleep in Detroit. We are tired, cranky, but we eventually made it to lima. We hit the sack at 1h00 am. [View Full Entry]

Ok so, after a rocky start Peru hasnt improved much. The armed guards and tanks are always stationed around the Government Palace which is on the main square and i suppose that should make me feel a little safer but it really doesnt! The city is a little prettier in the daylight but as soon as you get off the main square its really dodgy! I visited the Catherdral and the San Franscisco Convent yesterday. The catherdral was beautiful and i was given a full guided tour in english for about 2gbp! however the tour was more like and enquiry into [View Full Entry]

Peru is Scary! South America » Peru » Lima
Well here i am in scary Peru. I finally made it out of Guatemala, i could have stayed there forever but the rest of the world beckons! I met a nice couple from Belgium, Sarah and Steven, they were on the same flights from Guatemala City to San Jose (Costa Rica) then to Lima. We shared a taxi into town and now were staying in Hotel Espana. Its quite possibly the coolest place ever. Its an old colonial house in the centre of the city and it has loads of roof garden terraces and old dusy art. Theres hundreds of small [View Full Entry]
