Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

We arrived in Lima at 9:30 and headed to our hostel. Our hostel was not what we expected. We were a little afraid to sleep there. It was in a safe neighborhood, but it was a little rustic (that is being nice) We left as soon as we could to eat and shop the markets. I decided to brave it and get the Cervice (fish and shellfish cooked solely by the juice of a lime) I forgot to mention that I have been risky with my food choices. I have had sangia twice which has fruit. I have had Mojitos with [View Full Entry]

It's All Bueno! South America » Peru » Lima
So I broke the first rule of traveling, I let the outside world affect my trip. I come to these developing countries to balance my life as much as to help the people here. These trips make me put my own life into perspective, and make me realize that the little things that get me down are really no big deal. But somehow yesterday I lost sight of all that. I let the combination of a few events overwhelm my emotions. Events that were really no big deal. I thank everyone for their comments, and the people I spoke with yesterday [View Full Entry]

A Day in Lima South America » Peru » Lima
I could not sleep at all last night. I seriously found myself online responding to work e-mails about how to manage the channel business at midnight. What a pathetic way to spend a night in Lima! But this morning I was up at the crack of dawn, and on the road to exploring the massive city of Lima. Julie met me at my hotel around 9am just as I was finishing breakfast. Our tour guide picked us up shortly after, and we were on our way. We went to an archeological site on the southern border of Lima. This site has [View Full Entry]

Bones Under Church
Hairless Dog

Somehow I have made it to Peru, but my luggage went back to San Francisco. I guess it got fed up and decided to go home. I would normally be pretty upset about this, but I'm not really in a normal state of mind right now. Things just can't really get to me anymore. I seriously considered staying and volunteering at LAX for 2 weeks instead of coming down here. They could really use the help. And I was already prepared to teach conversational English and computer basics, and I think the majority of the employees there could greatly benefit from [View Full Entry]

Julie, a friend that I met in Tanzania last year, is stuck here until Tuesday with me! There are also two other girls that are stuck here as well, but we don't know where they are. So Julie came and woke me up today and we walked out to the main strip. There were thousands of people around and the streets were blocked off. I guess they are celebrating their Independence Day this weekend, even though the real Independence Day is not until July 28th. The parade was just getting started this afternoon, and has been going well into the night. [View Full Entry]

Getting through imigration control, I was faced with a wall of Peruvians holding signs and calling ´you want official taxi?´ The taxi journey was an experience in itself, owing to an absence of road markings and a general lack of motoring rules! I spent the night in the ´kamana hotel´a pretty nice place in central lima. I managed to take a stroll into the central Plaza and have a look at all the Government buildings... and saw the Presedents´ convoy rushing through (16 police escort cars, an ambulance and fire engine, or something similar). Day of waiting for our late evening flight. Sometime during the last 3 days we were supposed take a trip down to Punta Hermosa (1 hour south of Lima) so I could learn to surf in the 5 meter waves, but sloth and fatigue got the better of us. The perpetually depressing layer of winter fog that hangs three feet above your head all day, doesn't really provide much incentive to do much of anything. Perhaps for the better, knowing me I probably would have cracked my head into the nose of a great white shark or something. On a [View Full Entry]

Updating Blogs

Saturday, July 9, 2005 This morning we woke up, and guess what? I was COLD! I don´t think it´s the temperature, really, but perhaps the environment. It´s gray, and dull, and humid. I have never been to Lima any other time of year, but I think this is just what winter is like here. There was no hot water this morning, so getting ready for the day was no fun! We were rushed, and had little time for breakfast (only one piece of bread!) and 2 sips of coffee. We had to get up somewhat early as today Memo was baptizing [View Full Entry]
