Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Hi everyone. The first proper blog. Sorry itīs been along time coming..there was the small issue of 6 days in the Amazon to get through (more later - itīs a tough life) Anyway - after the worlds longest flight we arrived at Lima airport, and to say I (Steve) was suprised was an understatment. Having been īwarnedī that Lima was a bit rough at the edges, we turned up at a 21st century airport, first through customs, bags waiting, cash out the cash machine and a cab waiting! Fantastic. And then the first surreal moment...the cab driver was playing UK 80īs [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Lima a couple of days before our tour was due to start. Here we made the most of the artesian markets and stocked up on Alpaca products and other Peruvian crafts. After a chase around the city to find the tour start, we finally met up with our travelling companions for the next 3 weeks, who turned out to be a great group of people. First trip was to Paracas where we had our first group meal, tried an infamous Pisco Sour and got to know the group. In the morning we took a boat ride out to [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Lima two days before our tour started gave us time to explore Lima with Jason, Katheryn and Cynthia before they flew home. We celebrated Ella's birthday in style at the Rosa Nautica, a top class restaurant situated at the end of a beautiful pier on the seafront, with the waves crashing around below us as we ate. We enjoyed cocktails and gorgeous local fish and although it was pricey by Peruīs standards at around 25 pounds a head, it was well worth it. The next day we explored the city and took a taxi to a pottery museum in [View Full Entry]

Dear American friends, I'm a Peruvian who lives between Lima and NYC. I'm sad to read the posts about my homecountry made by US citizens, to whom I want to provide with some tips. Peru is not Las Vegas, neither Lima is Cancun, its not the place to be wild while being away or to live with the amenities of the US consumist and materialistic lifestyle. We are a poor country because the world economic order has influenced in part to our situation but mostly because of the failure of our leadership, not our people, who being majority indigenous and [View Full Entry]

Hello again. Well I orginally planned to stay in Lima for just a couple of nights, but after meeting up with some local Peruvians, who are now Mis Patas (My Friends), I ended up staying for 4 nights. This wasnīt a great struggle, particularly as I had booked into a nice hotel to chill out for a couple of days before making my way through Peru. The jacuzzi bath made things all the more relaxing!! I had been given the number of a Limean girl by Kerstin, a german girl I met in Brazil. There is no better way to see [View Full Entry]

A day before leaving Seattle for Lima, I stopped at Magus Used Bookstore and picked up a volume titled "An Area of Darkness" by Nobel Prize Winner U.S. Naipaul. The author, a Trinidad-born Indian now living in London, recounts his first trip back to India, where he was, in a sense, assulted by the sounds, smells, and attitudes he enountered there. As I follow Naipaulīs journey into places both familiar and exotic, I am comforted to know that there are others who have been stricken as I have by situations that at times make no sense at all, and by landscapes [View Full Entry]

Lima the Ugly South America » Peru » Lima
So, Mike wanted to check out a colonial hospital in Lima that he read about in a couple of archaeology articles. Thus, we arranged for a one-night stay in Lima, with a solid afternoon to find what he wanted. Mike didn't actually know where the hospital was, but as usual, impressed me by tracking down an approximate location and finding the actual building by talking to local people. Unfortunately, the colonial hospitals he was looking for are in a rather seedy part of Lima: no tourists here. One of the locals even approached us and warned us, IN ENGLISH, to be [View Full Entry]

Finally in Lima South America » Peru » Lima
I arrived in lima today. I arrived at Lima centro and stayed at the Plaza Hotel. The price for a double suite was pretty cheap, 70 soles which works out to be about 20 Canadian, hot water and Breakfast included. I find the city to be very polluted, which is difficult to breathe. I went to chinatown for lunch..lol ..i am chinese so i had to go there first. Chinese food is nothing like it is here. The taste is soo bland. People smoking in the restuarant ( as if there wasn't enough pollution around). Lima is a city of chaos. [View Full Entry]

August 29, 2005 Itīs 5AM and we are in the Lima airport. In a foggy valium haze we manage to find info on a hostel and grab a cab to Miraflores. We go back to sleep for several hours. Maybe we should have split a valium?? When we finally walk downstairs there are 2 tour guides waiting for us in the lobby. Have they been here since we checked in 5 hours ago? We walk to the Brazilian Embassy to get my visa only to find out that they are closed for 2 days due to a local holiday. We are [View Full Entry]
