Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Hola everybody! Well its been a busy few weeks since last writting. I joined the dragoman group in Quito just before new year and its been full on since then. After the new year celebrations i went back from Bańos to join the rest of the group. We were staying at this crazy couple (Franco & Nina) but were great fun. The next day we went to a place that was called Hola Vida - if that rings a bell to anyone that was where i was working in the jungle. It was cool to go back and see Patricio and [View Full Entry]

5 hours in... South America » Peru » Lima
Hey all, Randy and Grant have set up this travel blog for those that interested in following our travels in South America. The objectives are to tan these white Canadian bodies, learn some spanish, and see the sites. So far we´ve accomplished the first object twice! 5 hours off the plane and we were both sunburnt, and repeated that again today sitting by the pool side. The first five days hve seen us here and there, from Lima to Huacachina, a desert oasis. The first couple of days in Lima were a big crash course in Spanish, and led us to [View Full Entry]

Hello All First day in the capital of Peru today, after a hell of a long journey to get out here. Was flying for 14 hours in total, Heathrow to Amsterdam to Bonaire ( small Caribbean Island ), and then on to Lima. Was freezing in Amsterdam, so when I got off the plane at Bonaire was taken back a bit by the immediate heat, it was baking! The airport there was small, and Pink in colour, called Flamingo Airport. The whole Island was surrounded by a small Indigo barrier reef, great to see from the air. the flight to Lima [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Lima early Friday morning and had a great introduction to Peru. I nearly threw up after our cab ride from the airport. I’m not sure if it was the fumes or the nauseating driving. Supposedly the ride is supposed to take about 40 minutes. I think we did it in about 20. Ironically, the driver was buckled up, but our seatbelts did not work. The horn seems to be the most important part of the car here and I am sure must be replaced more often than the brakes. Luckily, it turns out our driver´s behaviour was an [View Full Entry]

After arriving in Peru and doing some sight seeing in Lima and down the West Coast Mel and I travelled to the Amazan jungle where the problems began. On a boat travelling down the Maldonado River I suddenly had my first ever epileptic seizure and was out for 15 mins in total. As you can imagine we were very concerned and when we returned to civilisation I had a brain scan and was told to return home to have brain surgery but not to worry! Yeah right! Anyway we can joke about it now because when I returned home I saw [View Full Entry]

If there was a place, in South America, that I wouldn´t class as Beautiful or interesting, it would be Tumbes! - me Yesterday morning I was in Cuenca in Southern Ecuador. Cuenca was a pleasant place, and I stayed a couple of days, I met a very nice couple from California and went for dinner and drinks with them (for some reason most of the people travelling in this part of South America are couples in their thirties). I made up my mind that I had to leave early in the morning to keep my options open when arriving in [View Full Entry]
