Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

HELLO PERU! South America » Peru » Lima
HELLO PERU!! We have to say that our first experiences in Peru have been quite interesting! We arrived yesterday and got to our hotel via local shuttle service. The drivers are nuts here! Not just nuts...crazy nuts!! Yes, we are going down a 2 lane street that Peruvian drivers have converted into 4 lanes. They are swirving in and out and blaring on the horn like there is no tommorrow! I thought I had experienced Latin American driving...but I was wrong...Guate/Mexico is very tame compared to this. Jeff will not let me cross the street unless nothing is coming...he keeps picturing [View Full Entry]

Day 1 South America » Peru » Lima
Well its my first day in Lima today, and I plan on just spending it in Mira Floras (the most affluent part of Peru, more 2nd World than 3rd). My mother wakes up at 6 am to go the Tropical Hospital and learn all about Topical diseases and 3rd World Medicine then she doesn't get home until about 5 pm or sometimes later. Then she usually studies for the rest of the night with a dinner break in between where we will go out for dinner somewhere in Mira Floras. So at about 9 am Harold took me to Cafe Cafe [View Full Entry]

View from Apartment

Everything was pretty normal up until the last left turn out of customs. After that things get really bizarre. There were about 500 taxi drivers screaming at me to hop in their cabs, all behind a chain link barrier, and a few Polica sprinkled in front of them like bouncers at a punk rock concert. Some of them hold signs with names on them. It is a popular past time to pose as drivers and pick up dumb wide eyed gringos and drive them to the nearest ATM where they hold a knife to your throat and force you to empty [View Full Entry]

The View from atop the Apartment

Finally it was the day we were about to meet our sponsor child from Plan (www.plan.fi). We met the Plan workers at the office and they showed us their premises and told us about their work. After that we got a ride to the outskirts of Lima to a poor community where our sponsor child Estanli lives with his family. Once we arrived closer to Estanli´s house we saw him waiting for us at the doorsteps and he greeted us with a hug and kiss. It was so nice to be able to meet the family and talk with them after [View Full Entry]

Hola amigos! Well we made it. 'twas a long and laboreous trip for which we are still paying the price in terms of sleep (at least, that's the excuse for the afternoon siestas!) Leaving Lima airport was intimidating to say the least, it must have taken a good hour for our bags to arrive and then we had to go through Peruvian customs. One has to complete a customs declaration and then go through a 'traffic light gate' whereby you push a button, if the light turns red you get searched, if it goes green you are free to proceed. Needless [View Full Entry]

Today (Sunday) I am in Lima. Home of watch and shoe thieves apparently. Although we did manage to walk three blocks at four in the morning last night without any problem. Apparently it seems that taxis can be just as dodgy as walking the streets. And you do have to watch your pockets as you are wondering the streets - but apart from that all seems fine if you are sensible. I´ve just visited the church and convent of san fransisco where they have a five hundred year old library and the bones of 25000 people in the catacombs. Interesting the [View Full Entry]

Lima Liked it, could have stayed longer but didn´t. Arequipa There is actually an old monastery here which used to have over 200 nuns inside, of all ages, and now houses about 30. But they never leave the walls of the monastry. Can you imagine that? Never seeing what the outside world is like - cafes, fashion, money etc. They go in or are born there and die there. And spend a life worshipping all day. That really is seclusion and manipulation. There are tours of the monastery (open to the public from 1970), but I only walked around the protective [View Full Entry]

GALAPAGOS BACK TO ECUADOR After our visit to Galapagos, we were to meet the Crystal Serenity at Lima in Peru, the next country south of Ecuador. But first we had to detour back through Ecuador to get there. This was a long trip, beginning with the obligatory boat and plane trips from Galapagos to the Ecuador mainland. The scoop among our group was that Ecuador is willing to donate the Galapagos Islands for research and conservation, but any air travel to and from the Galapagos Islands must first pass through the airport at Guayaquil on the Ecuador mainland, where many tourist [View Full Entry]

According to conventional backpacker wisdom, Lima is a dirty, smelly, polluted city, choked with smoke belching traffic and generally not a nice place to stay. I can't remember how many people had told both Em and I that Lima was best avoided, but being the stubborn pair that we are, we decided to go there nonetheless. There were a number of reasons for this other than outright bloodymindedness; it sounded interesting, we needed to go there to see Oscar (a Peruvian friend we'd made in Mancora some weeks before) and the Footprint guide said we could get some top Chinese food [View Full Entry]

Hola everybody! Well its been a busy few weeks since last writting. I joined the dragoman group in Quito just before new year and its been full on since then. After the new year celebrations i went back from Baņos to join the rest of the group. We were staying at this crazy couple (Franco & Nina) but were great fun. The next day we went to a place that was called Hola Vida - if that rings a bell to anyone that was where i was working in the jungle. It was cool to go back and see Patricio and [View Full Entry]
