Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

We have arrived in Lima, Peru finally after about 21 hours of flights and transits....I personally got about 5 hours of sleep and Josh managed to sleep most of all of the flights. We are fine and well in Peru after our long and tiring flights, and of course the taxi which nearly killed us...well i dont know how many times it was in the 40min trip to our hostel, but several times over we were close enough to lick the other cars (i can see why many didnt have wing mirros anymore). It was Vietnam all over again but more [View Full Entry]

Lima Continued South America » Peru » Lima
Well after being in Lima for a couple of days, we have come to the conclusion that it is just another big dirty city. We had a little trouble finding our hostel as there werent any signs outside or anything, but none the less we did find it, and it was rather comfortable. We spent our first day walking down the main road towards the beach in Miraflores. The middle of the road was lined with trees, so it was a pleasant enough walk of about an hour. The beach itself was ,bot a becah by our standards, instead of [View Full Entry]

Disaster of a flight South America » Peru » Lima
So onwards to Lima. Flight was delayed by 1 hour. So got myself a big bottle of water and a sandwhich. As the flight was at 12, I was quite amazed nobody was at the gate yet, I guessed something was wrong, two other peruvians were standing confused as well. But they said as it was another ora, it would be ok, yeah right I thought. So found the right gate, told the peruvians as well, but they didn´t believe me. Saw them at 12 rushing in, while were still waiting. So after boarding, some terrible food and a few hours [View Full Entry]

Well, we have safely arrived in Lima, Peru, in route to the Galapagos Islands. We have now been without our friend and translator, Jill, for 36 hours, without major incident. Hopefully, this will keep up as we have two more weeks or so until we are reunited. Jill should be enjoying Copacabana at this time, continuing on to points unknown, at least to us. When last we spoke, we were heading out of La Paz, Bolivia on a bus to Juliaca, Peru. After a fitful night´s sleep, where all of us felt the return to altitude, Sara and I left early [View Full Entry]

Day 6:  South America » Peru » Lima
I was pretty hungover today. Last night I went with my mother to their friday night activity which is basically a bunch of doctors (mostly specialists) sitting around trying to act like normal people. (Doctors are a different breed of people, especially 1st World Doctors wanting to work in 3rd World Places). Two of the Doctors showed slides of other countries, I believe both were in Africa. They have been to and what type of conditions there hospitals were in. Watching these slide shows was a mix of inspiration and hopelessness at the same time. Alot of the times the situation [View Full Entry]

Larco Mar (aka what I like to call Gringo Land) is a shopping compound right on the coast of Lima, probably built by the Americans. The most Westerners I have seen at once in one place is here. They have a bowling alley, a shopping centre and even a Radio Shack. Its basically a mall built into a cliff overhanging the ocean, a refuggee camp for Gringos. No beggars allowed. They cant get in if they tried as the entrances are all protected by security guards. When the chaos of Lima gets to them, the Gringos all come here, I imagine [View Full Entry]

Day 4: Museo South America » Peru » Lima
So today we went to the Museum and then a the Jockey Mall which I believe is the largest mall in Peru. All the malls here are like compounds with giant walls around them and security at the entrances. In fact security is everywhere, and every store no matter where you go is overstaffed, I guess because there is not much money here labour is really cheap. Even at the Karokee Bar there is 6 waitresses, 1 DJ, 2 Managers and 1 security guard on duty at all times. But I think if it was Canada, the size of the establishment [View Full Entry]

Day 3: Football! South America » Peru » Lima
Futbal So my only request so far was to go to a football game. It took a little work and research to find one, but somehow we got an address. My Mother checked with one of the professors at Gorgas and he said it was really dangerous for white people to go to a football game in Lima (of course this didn't stop us) and suggested that we go with his Peruvian staff, but since we found out about the game at such short notice we decided to go it alone. Yes, just me and the Orange Gringo going into the [View Full Entry]
