Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

We're here! South America » Peru » Lima
Greetings from Perù! It´s a sunny day in Lima, which apparently is a rare occurance, so we´ll be a little brief! Lima is wonderful, a lot cleaner than we expected. It´s right on the coast, and yesterday we saw the ocean, among other things. It´s most always very hazy and cool here, which is why we got excited to open the curtains and see sun this morning. Even at night, though, the temperatures are mild. We were out in the center of Lima last night trying to find a sweater store and a restaurant and we heard loud reggaeton music playing, [View Full Entry]

Last day in Lima South America » Peru » Lima
Twice in one day... don´t worry, we won't be this frequent in the future, we´re trying to get some photos off the cameras! Today we wandered around on the beach and in the city. The beach was much better than expected. It was all pebbles and had incredibly loud waves, but in a good way. We ate two delicious meals today, and both of mine had eggs! :) Tomorrow we will catch a bus to Ica, further south. Anyway, here are some pictures! Love, Mariel and Ben [View Full Entry]

I started my exhausted trip from India to Peru at the 1st of June in the night. I think I reached the record of the amount of flights in 48 hours.I will write them down just for the statistics ... First an 8 hours flight from Chennai to Frankfurt and from there another flight to Brussels. My dear Kristine was there to pick me up and to bring me to my parents. It was a really strange experience: cold, expensive, white people, too clean... but it was great to see my family and some of my best friends back. My mom [View Full Entry]

----Please note that the photos in this entry are extremely poor. Our camera was being repaired and we used a disposable, which obviously had problems as well. I think they will do the job though, and it will give you a better idea of the poor lighting conditions that the doctors were working under....read on... During my pre-teenyears, I was what some would call...well...homely. (My parents just read that and gasped, as they believed that I was nothing but beautiful.) Well, okay then, I was a "beautiful" awkwardly tall, uncoordinated, ruddy-haired, moon-faced girl, with very, ver [View Full Entry]

Waiting....
Our New Friend
"Mandy the Chair"

Today was the strangest day. We woke up at 5am and headed towards the Juliaca Airport. Once there, we saw a massive line of people at the counters. Granted, this was a really small airport - as in only two runways - so we didn’t think much of it. That is, until this lady, who was in our Sillustani tour from yesterday, asked us if we were flying to Lima. We said yes. She said no. Huh? Our flight to Lima had been canceled. Some people said because a flight from the day before was canceled, so we were getting bumped [View Full Entry]

So, the foreseen problems predicted by the ghastly check-in wench in Australia?? Non-Existent! I knew I had it all under control. The arrival gate at Lima airport was up to its usual best: crazy and chaotic- I barely noticed, there was only one face I was looking for- the crows of people were thick but there he was, like a butterfly among a sea of moths- flying into my arms; forgetting all about mum and dad being left to the perils of taxi drivers, hostel peddlers, trolley pushers. ELVIS AND ME
VIEW OF MIRAFLORES FROM HOTEL WINDOW.

Well, I´m still here! Just enjoying the partying too much, I guess. I have decided to go to Nazca after all though. I´d met so many people that were disappointed, but the one person I met who found it absolutely amazing and incredible and spectacular was enough to convince me it had to be done. So some time this week I´ll get on with that. Anyway, I had a look around the old centre here, which was very pleasant. A surprisingly long walk away though. And I had a blind date! One of the guys in the hostel, Seb, met a [View Full Entry]

Laughing in Lima South America » Peru » Lima
So...onwards to Peru´s capital city. We stayed pretty close to the Plaza de Armas in the centre of the city, but Lima is a massive place with almost 10 million inhabitants and many varied districts. Wandering round the main square, which includes the presidential palace, it was very reassuring to see a myriad of riot police equipped with shields and tear gas guns, and there was even a tank peering round the corner. Great. At the time, Peru was gearing up for the election run-off between Alan Garcia Perez (former president from 1985-90, his term characterised by hyperinflation, devaluation of t [View Full Entry]
