Afraid for our lives
Driving to the LDS Temple So after my sister threatened to de-friend me on Facebook the next time I posted a picture of me having fun I realized I have been an excessive poster this year. Thus I have decided to take a different approach with sharing my pictures and experiences in Peru.
If you want to hear the stories keep reading, if you just want to look at the pictures feel free to enjoy the selection… I do like my pictures.
Day one of our Peru adventure started in Lima with Melissa and I getting up and going to the temple. This sounds like a normal activity right? We showered, got dressed and risked our lives to spend some time on the temple grounds.... Yup, I said risked our lives because that is exactly what happened. I have been to some Country’s where the drivers are scary, but nothing compares to Peru, it takes the cake when it comes to driving like a crazy person. Our driver from the hotel almost killed us at least three time, however at the end of the drive he still got a big tip because for ever time he almost killed us there were two additional times
he saved us from other drivers!
When we finally got to the temple it was so busy (like crazy mad house busy) that we were not able to do a session. I wish I would have realized how busy the Lima Temple is so we could have made a reservation to do an endowment session, but instead we decided to did do initatory’s which was interesting considering it was all done in Spanish... In case you all didn't know, I don't speak Spanish... Made for an interesting time. But it was still awesome and the little tinny Peruvian ladies were so cute! They loved Melissa and I and ended up giving both of us big hugs and kisses when we were done.
After the initiator's we went outside to take pictures where we quickly became the main attraction. We met tones of different people while walking around the grounds. First there was a cute young girl, age 17 who was in Lima for doctors appointments. She had traveled 5 hours by bus and wanted to come to the temple while there. Next was the group of young kids on a youth temple trip. They had taken a bus
Yikes
Virgin Sacrifice 12-14 hours to get there. They were so fun to talk to and they were so funny, all they wanted to take pictures with Melissa and I. The last person we met at the temple was when we went in to have lunch and ran into a tour guide from Cuzco... The funny part about that is that Melissa emailed him when we first started looking into coming and were trying to deiced what tour company to go with. I think we will be emailing him about meeting for a tour on Monday.
After the temple we again put our lives in the hands of another taxi driver and headed to Huaca Pucllana, an ancient ruins that is in the heart of Lima. The ruins were originally an old temple for the Lima people and were used for the sacrifices women and children. While on the tour we met some great people from Israel and NYC and we all headed over to the Cocoa Museum. They had demonstrations on how they make the chocolate from the cocoa bean as well as samples for us to try... It was a good stop 😉
Next we headed over to Parque
Kennedy where we walked around and had a churro. Melissa and I both bought wool hats and then we stat down to do some people watching. As we were sitting around the square there was a big group of kids that came up to us and asked if we could help them with their English project. We then spent the next hour and a half helping them with their English and making a video for their English class. While we were doing this we also affected another group who wanted Melissa to teach them English... It was a very interesting night.
In the end we walked back to our hotel stopping at a little Empanada restaurant where we had the most AMAZING empanada’s filled with some kind of meat (don't ask don't tell rule applies here) and sweet potato... YUMMM!
