Hola, Well I am back on the pacfic coast in a nice resort town of Trajillo (pronounced tra-he-yo) for some seafood and sunrays after a long, but incredibly scenic overnight bus ride from Loja, Ecuador. The bus went through the world's driest desert (the same desert Trajillo is in, not that you would know), a spectacular sight. On the far right of the bus view sat the ominous silhouette of some frighteningly high andean peaks. To the close right, extending into the peaks, was a perfectly flat desert. The sight looked like giant rocks had slid over, and completely demoloished, Saskachawan. To the right you could see the same flat nothingness except throughout were little, almost man-made looking but too amazingly numerous to possibly be, sand bumps, like a desert with acne, or something. To the ... read more

Fik ogsaa lige ... read more

You know that song by the Buena Vista Social Club: Chan Chan. Yeah, I like that song. You know that ancient city by the Chimu People: Chan Chan. Yeah, I like that ancient city. I went to the ruins fifteen minutes from Trujillo. They were pretty impressive, I mean no pyramids or anything, but big walls. At one time sixty thousand people lived here. I didn´t want to pay the six dollars for a tour guide, so I sort of lurked behind groups of English-speaking tourists. I heard that when the ruler of the city died, hundreds of teenage girls killed themselves as they brought his body throughout his region. Crazy. I ended up taking antibiotics for the mild case of dysentary I probably don´t have. I went to the farmacia, and asked for the pills... ... read more

I was in Piura from Friday through Sunday. I hung out with Zandi and her Peace Corps friends. They had a barbecue, I ate cow heart, it wasn´t bad. That town was laid back. I didn´t do much... I watched a movie, ate some food, hung out... enjoyable. Last night I came to Trujillo... the biggest town in northern Peru. It seems like a good place, they´ve got ruins and shit. I´ve been feeling kind of sick... (rhymes with ¨craveller´s biahrea¨) so I´m taking it easy today... I just tried to upload my pictures... but the computer erased them all... it is pretty disappointing because I had a picture of some hardcore Lima graffiti, it repped ¨Harry Potter.¨ Oh the laughs we could have had. ... read more

After some time in the rolling hills of Peru's northern highlands we were back on the coast, and after disembarking our night bus and rubbing our sleepy eyes, were treated to a fine warm morning. We had taken the decision to stay at Huanchaco, a beach resort a little way from Trujillo, as we'd been advised that it was a better bet than the city itself. Whilst the place had a certain charm about it we concluded that Mancora was a much nicer resort, if that's what you're after. It didn't matter much to us though, as we were yet again in search of ancient ruins and trying to imagine how things looked hundreds and thousands of years before. Trujillo is home to a number of interesting sites, the most important of which is Chan Chan. ... read more

Speaking of culture, I thought it would be nice to include photos of our splendid Spanish teachers in Cuenca - Cesar and Priscila. Meanwhile I apologise in advance to readers for the literally dyspeptic quality of this blog. Trouble is, following a spot of the old Third World tummy trouble, this morning I redecorated the bathroom of our hotel in a style and colour unlikely to find favour with the owner or fellow guests. Prior to this I was bitten by a dog in Vilcabamba (for geography fans - this means you, Dave J). Typically, Bridget failed to capture the moment on camera. Speaking of which, I then left said camera in the back of a taxi and only retrieved it thanks to the quick thinking of a nice young Dutch couple. At first sight the ... read more

Our time in Ecuador was always going to be short as we had arranged to Volunteer with an organisation called Bruce Peru in Trujillo, Peru, from end of November for a month and so had to get a move on. So with bags packed we waved adios to Guayaquil and borded our bus to Peru. Fearful of a 16 hour bus journey to Trujillo, arriving at midnight and beginning our Voluntary placement with Bruce Peru the following day, we decided to break up the journey with a stopover in Mancora, a little surfy town a couple of hours across the border. We had heard horror stories about the border crossing with Peru but fortunately our experience was problem free. So with a hop, skip and a jump we were in Peru. After 10 hours on board ... read more

The North of Peru is described as the Egypt of S.Am as it houses many pre-Inca ruins and treasures. The best bit about this place is that many Gringos pass through it without stopping on their way to or from Ecuador so it still feels 'unspoilt'. I guess our experience here was majorly fuelled by our excellent time Volunteering with 'Bruce Peru' and the many wicked people we met, but we really like the city too. Compared to lots of South American cities, Trujillo has that compact, small town feel and locals are incredibly friendly and down to earth, which is not bad considering it is Peru´s second city (although a title disputed by Arequipa) The city is located not far from a seemingly endless stretch of desert. This meant of course, no rain which was ... read more

Seen from the upper deck of Naylamp Hostel, almost the perfect place for such an event. It is my last night in Peru, I just watched my last Peruvian sunset over the south Pacific Ocean with a gentle off shore breeze, the weather is perfect as I sip my beer and listen to the tales of several other travellers and spin some of my own. The little town of Huanchaco, just up the coast from Trujillo, has provided the perfect place to decompress from a busy trip. The town sits along a crescent on the coastline and is turning into a bit of a surfing destination due to the two breaks along the coast here. More importantly, it is just the beach, which is always the place to end a trip. I arrived after an overnight ... read more
