Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Week-end à la jungle! South America » Peru » Junin » La Merced

I didn't pay for a crazy excursion into the jungle. Instead, I met a kid named Michael. Michael is a guy who lives to travel, making jewelry and selling it pretty much all around Peru and South America. We met in Cusco and I practiced my Spanish with him a few times. The first thing I knew about him was that he was from the jungle. When he left Cusco he told me to email him and that we could go to the jungle and eat some fruit. Sounded like a plan to me! Entonces, I am now in a town [View Full Entry]

So we are officially done the volunteering portion of the trip. Even though the kids were energetic to say the least, we miss them already. Even Victor Hugo and his hair pulling tendancies. Others we shall miss are spider man, who will go nowhere without his spider man costume, Carlos and his young love Melanie, Eduardo and his young love Carlos, Mayerly and her innability to eat on her own, and Victor Kevin ad his toothless smile. Once we realized that the kids were better behaved when we gave them something to do (something the teachers didn´t always) they quickly learned [View Full Entry]

We haven´t actually met anyone named george here, but we are looking out for trees. (andrea laughs hystericaly for a few minutes) We arrived in the jungle on tuesday, and to our homestay, which is very, open concept in as much as none of the hallways have roofs. What do they do in the rainy season? We are living with a local Pastor, and family, so don´t expect any shenannigans like our last trip to the jungle (Kristina sighs and has had to curb her 4:30 am dancing. The 4:30 pm dancing however is still going strong-- apparently the kids think [View Full Entry]

Before you ask, no, we did not see any lions sleeping or otherwise, but we did pet a baby wildcat. adorable. we have just returned from a weekend in the jungle, about 3 hours away from huancayo. we left on thursday, and made a stop in the reputed "largest caves in south america" complete with pre-incan and post-incan graffiti and a stalagmite in the shape of the virgin mary. apparently, the virgin mary was 3 feet tall, beige and lumpy. we arrived in san ramon/ la merced and the hotel, in case anyone was wondering, was beautiful, had a giant pool [View Full Entry]
