Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Huancayo! South America » Peru » Junin » Huancayo
Hola mis amigos! This weekend, five of my friends and I took our first big trip outside of Lima to Huancayo. It's a city in the Junin valley in the Andes. We left Thursday night and took a night bus (about 6 hours) from Lima to Huancayo. The night bus was...interesting. I got excited when I heard that they would play a movie, then I found out it was Free Willy 2. Not so exciting. I watched it anyway, though, because I had 6 hours to kill and I wasn't tired. I think it's safe to say that I never want [View Full Entry]

2ND WEEKEND!! South America » Peru » Junin » Huancayo
Hello! On Saturday morning we went to Torre Torre which, alike everything else here, you have to climb up some very steep hills to reach! As we walked through a small village on our way, many children ran up to us eager to practice their english shouting ´hello, i love you, goodbye!´ Torre Torre was great to see and made some brilliant photos, but i´m pretty certain that it is the most terrifying thing i have ever done! It is in the middle of nowhere and definitely not tourist friendly! We had to climb along thin strips of rock, whilst very [View Full Entry]

Update South America » Peru » Junin » Huancayo
Hello, I have been relatively busy this week- helping at the orphanage 9.30-1 then at the school 3-5. Whilst at the orphanage I have been trying to entertain the babies, change them and help to feed the toddlers. This sounds simple enough but to be honest i have found it exhausting! Lunch is usually reversed so that the giggling children try to feed me their food and the spoons often become phones as they all shout at eachother! I have to admit that i find it quite amusing, but i can understand how it isn´t for the staff who are on [View Full Entry]

Hello, I landed in Lima late last night and I'm still unsure about who i stayed the night with! I was picked up from the airport and taken to a very nice flat near by, shown to my room , woken up at 6am and told i was going on the bus!! Lima was very interesting, especially the extreme contrast in wealth. There were huge colourful billboards in every direction standing directly above homeless women. Women were working on food stalls with their babies in prams, by their side and the driving standards ... were interesting!! After a 7 hour bus [View Full Entry]

The Jungle South America » Peru » Junin » Huancayo
I started this journal entry while I was still in Peru, but unfortunately have not been able to publish until now. Please Excuse the delay and enjoythe stories from one of my favorite side trips I took while in Peru. I must first apologize because I am a little behind on journal entries. We went to the jungle Friday June 26- Saturday June 27. We traveled from Huancayo three hours to La Merced, a jungle town. To get there we had to travel up and over the mountains and then descend down into the jungle. The road to the jungle is [View Full Entry]

This week has been full of exciting opportunities. I was in OB/GYN for rounds which was really my first exposure to the world of OB/GYN, and I have found it very interesting here. I really do not have anything other than my medical anthropology articles to compare it to. I would say that at least 50% of the women in the postpartum area have had c-sections. Probably at least 35% are under the age of twenty. Both of these numbers seem incredibly high!!! Prenatal care is available but most women, especially teen moms do not take advantage of the free care. The [View Full Entry]

I just wanted to take so time to write about the amazing animals in Peru. I will write in my next blog about the animals I saw while in the jungle, totally fascinating, but I want to write now about the animals of my everyday life in Huancayo, Peru. I mentioned in my last blog that much of the Junin Region or state has an agriculture economy. Huancayo as a district has many smaller towns that are completely Ag based. even within the city of Huancayo there are small farmers. This leads to an awful lot of animal interactions or viewings [View Full Entry]

This weekend was beautiful! We spent Saturday touring all of the smaller towns within and around Huancayo. Our first stop was the textile village of Hualhuas. Here a textile worker showed us how the llama and alpaca and sheep wool was all made into the yarn that they make everything from. He also showed us several plants that grow in the valley that he uses for dyes. The products were beautiful. The big wall hangings and blankets were very soft and very expensive because they are woven either from alpaca or llama fur and they took ten 10-11hour days to complete. [View Full Entry]

First of all, here is a link to Derek's photo album: http://picasaweb.google.com/daugz14/PeruPhotos?authkey=Gv1sRgCOKK7MWz9I-4zwE&feat=email# He is the only one to have successfully loaded photos. They include pictures from our two hours in Lima, the bus ride to Huancayo, the outside of the hospital, the fluoride treatment day, playing with the kids at Rosario orphanage, the concert and the hike, please enjoy! Now on to this week. This week I have been doing rounds in the Pediatrics unit. What I should tell you is that pediatrics here is not like pediatrics in the US. In the US the sur [View Full Entry]
