Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
We had an extra early start this morning, as we had to eat breakfast and leave the campsite early enough for the porters to be able to pack everything up and run it all down the hill to get to the local public train by 6am. If they missed that train, they would be stuck with having to use an expensive tourist train instead. We also wanted to get to the Winay Wayna guard post to line up to get into the Machu Picchu reserve early. We walked in the dark with many layers of clothes on due to the very [View Full Entry]

On Friday, 18 September, we follow the Inka Trail! It is an ancient path that the Inkas had constructed in order to establish communication between the numerous cities of their empire. We had the chance to do THE Inka Trail: the traditional trail to Machu Picchu. The access to the traditional Inka Trail is controlled and we had to book from February in order to be included in the group of September! Especially after Machu Picchu has been declared as one of the new seven wonders, the Inka Trail has become extremely popular. Some years ago the access was free and [View Full Entry]

Peruvian empanada! Its supertasty!

Our Inca trail tour group visited a village within walking distance from Urubamba, a main town in the Sacred valley. We reached the town by foot from the Urubamba bus terminal within 45 minutes finding a few houses on either side of the one main dirt street. We went around the back of the first house that we visited to see how the occupants of the house made chocolate. Cacao is grown locally and the women demonstrating put some roasted cacao with some sugar into a manual grinder (that looked like the manual meat grinder that I bought Dan years ago), [View Full Entry]

Peruvian Haircut! South America » Peru » Cusco
Hola Blog Readers, Worried Parents and Bowel-Movement Enthusiasts, I wrote the last blog just before we went out for a meal in Puno I seem to remember. We found a nice little restaurant down a back alley which gave a really good set menu for 15 Soles. We walked outside and this man I recognised was walking past us. I thought he was one of my old primary school teachers but it turned out to be the actor who plays Max Scully from the Australian soap Neighbours. Laura said I played it cool and didnīt look like too much of an [View Full Entry]

We left Huacachina and caught the night bus to Cusco, which was our longest ride so far at a whopping 18 hours. Cusco is the gringo capital of Peru, and possibly South America, and the staging post for trips to Machu Picchu. The city is also at an altitude of 3300m and, as we had just come from sea level, we found it difficult to do anything strenuous for the first couple of days. We booked ourselves on an Inka Jungle trip with a company called Conde (more about them later) - This is an alternative to the classic Inca Trail [View Full Entry]

Old capital of the Incas South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Originally named Cosco, meaning the "navel or centre of the world", by the Incas when the city was their capital, the city of Cusco today contains a combination of Inca and Spanish architecture. The empire of the Incas extended north to Colombia and south to Chile and Argentina before the Spainards arrived in 1533. The Spanish built on the Inca walls and they followed the lines of the original Inca streets, when they continued to develop the city. The main square of Plaza de Armas was where Francisco Pizzaro claimed the conquest of Cusco and the Spanish added stone arches and [View Full Entry]

And we arrive in Cusco! The ancient capital of the Inkas and today the Gringo capital of Latin America. "Gringos" is the word they use here for North-Americans and Europeans. It is an amazing city! Great places to have breakfast, lunch, dinner. Fantastic peruvian coffee! And here is the centre for organising your trip to the trails of the Inkas or to the jungle of the Amazon! First we stayed in a small and cheap hostal in San Blas, a neighbourhood in Cusco. But we had our own bathroom, (usually) hot water to shower and 5 beds to sleep in! (because [View Full Entry]
