Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Machu Picchu  South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
Time is running out. I need to be in Buenos Aires in just over a week and I have still to do possibly the one visit which everyone who comes to South America does, Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail is one of the ways to get to Machu Picchu, but this is very expensive and currently has a waiting list of at least four months. There are alternative treks which you can do, the Lares trek and the Jungle Trek, just to name a couple. These are easy enough to book up, but both take four days in order to complete. As we arrived in Cuzco i was feeling a little ill, not really sure if its mild altitude sickness, a bug, a fever or just feeling rub down, i have not really been on top form since I arrived in South America. On our first night we all went for a beer in an irish bar on the main square, inside you could have been in an O’neils, with the wooden panelled walls littered with memorabilia, i looked at the menu, cottage pie, oh yes please. They were quite a large number of the group there i had a beer but [View Full Entry]

I Was rudely awakened today by motion sickness on my 18 hours bus from Ica to Cuzco, but fortunately, to the sight of the sun just rising over the snow-capped Peruvian Andes. Cuzco is unbelievably beautiful, and I am looking forward to finally being tranquilo and staying for at least a few days. Still unsure on Inca Trail or other treks, but definitely will visit Machu Pichu. I just came from Paracas and Ica with several Israeli and Brittish travelers. Paracas is beautiful (Islas Ballestas) but otherwise pretty uninteresting. Ica was pretty fun, as we did a wine & pico tasting [View Full Entry]

Hello again people. Weīve had ourselves another busy week, so here comes the story. Arrived Cusco last Tuesday, didnīt do a great deal then except wander round town, few beers and get settled. Cusco is an absoloutely beautiful city by the way. Wednesday we decided to book ourselves into the City Tour, in truth, it was not a city tour, but more like a religious tour, church after cathedral after holy temple-all very beautiful, but there only so many churches I can look at in one day and remain interested, this went on for 6 hours. My God, if there had [View Full Entry]

This is the view from the Watchmans tower, taken after we'd just climbed Huayna Picchu, the peak in the background that towers over the site
The small friendly town of Ollantaytambo was easily my favourite stop along the Sacred Valley, with its impressive Inca fortress, stunning views and grid like Inca town planning it was a fascinating place to spend a day. The Inca Emperor Pachacuti built a town and ceremonial centre here when he conquered the region in the mid-15th century and the rebellion leader Manco Inca later retreated here in 1536 after his defeat by the Spanish at Sacsayhuaman. Francisco Pizarro's younger brother Hernando followed with his troops, determined to capture the rebel leader, but at Ollantaytambo they met fier [View Full Entry]

Hi guys, Vi er lige kommet hjem fra den mest fantasktiske fire dages hike i Andesbjergene! Foerst skal I lige have lidt baggrundshistorie...
