Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Greetings from Aquas Calientes. Technical, that means hot waters, but it´s also slang for fire water, aka booze.... One set back this morning. We had a pair of sisters traveling with us and one of them did not adjust well to the altitude change, so they have left us and gone back to Lima. Odd thing about our hotel. There were no clocks in the room. It just seems strange to me, I guess I´ve gotten spoiled. Oh, and they had curry chicken for breakfast. That struck me as odd.... Left the hotel at 8 am and headed back to the [View Full Entry]

South America I South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
!Hola amigos! I write from my home for a week, room 110 of La Casa de mi Abuela, in Arequipa, Peru. Arequipa is said to be the unofficial capital of Southern Peru. It is the second largest city, by a small margin, and it has a certain modern feel that did not exist in Cusco, and, from what I understand, certainly not in Lima. It is arid here. You can feel it in your skin and your nostrils. I have seen nary a cloud in, what, four or five days here. And at above 8,000 feet in altitude, the Sun shines [View Full Entry]

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu
Nyt on jo löytynyt muutama muukin yr [View Full Entry]

First half of the day was getting to Cusco (also spelled Cuzco). Up at 5:30, on the bus for trip to the airport at 7:00. Check in went pretty smoothly, Mauricio was able to print out most of our boarding passes and security was fine. One thing about this trip that I've forgotten to mention that is a bit annoying is that we have to hand our passports in at every hotel. So, Mauricio has had my passport almost as much as I have. Flight to Cusco was good, only 53 minutes. But I 've got to tell you, coming over [View Full Entry]

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu
An amazing sight after 4 days of hard trekking!
Whilst relaxing in northern Peru, the owner of our hotel invited us to visit her house on the beach in Colan. The journey there was an adventure in itself as the final part involved speeding down the highway at 110kph whilst both squashed in the front seat of the taxi with no seatbelt! However, the house was directly on the beach with only the crashing of the waves to disturb the peace. So much so we both fell asleep on the decking in the sunshine! We then flew to Lima the capital of Peru and fortunately we stayed in a really [View Full Entry]

Wednesday 7th We arrived in Lima on Andy´s Birthday after flying across the Andes with some beautiful snow topped mountains.....and then in Lima we had a wander around Miraflores (the posh neighbourhood) taking in the funky coloured buildings and sampling some of Peru´s culinary delights. Thursday 8th Having arrived in Peru we wanted to make use of our full day in Lima, so headed off early to the zoo, which had a good selection of local and international animals. We went early, which worked out well as it wasn’t too busy for what turned out to be a Peruvian national holiday! [View Full Entry]

Why We Leave the Road South America » Peru » Cusco
Jump in a car, catch a bus, pedal the wheels, or lace up the shoes and follow the road. Stop to eat. Use the bathroom. And keep going. Follow it all the way to the next metropolis. Use the phone. Have a drink. Put on your seatbelt and turn up the volume. Make sure the camera is charged. Open up the guidebook and read about places others have been. Adjust the temperature. Keep going. It´s what we do. Yet somehow, from time to time, we are pulled off the road. Into the ocean. The desert. A foreign country. Atop a mountain. [View Full Entry]
