Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

15/10/09 Well I have officially been away for 5 weeks today! I had a wonderful lie in then packed up my things and left the house...after saying my goodbyes of course! I got a taxi to my hotel, it was a right posh one!!! I checked in and left my stuff in the room. i left a note for whoever i was going to be sharing with then headed off to the plaza. Found a little restaurant off the plaza called ´the crown´ and i had a full english with a delicious coffee sitting on a lovely sun filled balcony overlooking [View Full Entry]

Aion ostaa Brasiliassa, Rio de Janeirossa, uudet lasit parin viikon kuluttua. Onneksi minulla oli vanha kännykkäni m [View Full Entry]

Salkantay Trek South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
On Monday, upon returning from Arequipa, I decided on doing the Salkantay Trek. After pricing around tour companies (they are twice as expensive when you book online rather than in the Cusco office -- and most offer the exact same tour for the exact same price. Even the established, Lonely-Planet-recommended companies did the exact same trek, often with the same food and everything). I was able to get the student discount, making my trip only slightly more expensive than a two-day trip to Machu Picchu. I spent the rest of the day trying to visit ruins museums included in the Boleto [View Full Entry]

Marsvin
Marsvin

Taender
Paa trods af afsky.
Inka Kola

The trucks backfiring, people smashing their way into the hotel and varied explosions made their way into my drowsing head, keeping it on yellow alert most of the night in case the maniacs outside made it into my room. I was in a lucid state of slumber or lost in a foggy semi-conscious mental ambulation, but the point is I was both sleep and wakefulness -deprived all night. I have a few memories of ugly dreams and one of it occurring to me that with all the hubub I baby might not be safe. She was calling out to me through [View Full Entry]

Evening in Cusco South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
This morning we had free time. Some people went back to Machu Picchu, some went hiking and some went shopping. I slept in. I haven't gotten a full 8 hours on this trip and it's not making me happy. After breakfast, I went walking along the river across from our hotel and took a bunch of pictures of the pretty flowers there. The group met up for lunch, which was a cream of vegetable soup and stir fry chicken with potatoes and rice. The stir fry was good and I liked the sauce better than the Thai sauce of last night's [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Cusco really early, around 6am, and found a stunning room overlooking the main Plaza. We managed to haggle price down and went out for some breakfast. After a few laps of town we headed for a bar called Nortons Rat. Nice place, and has 3 dart boards, that was me sorted for a while. We ordered a beer and played some darts. We then sat on the balcony and ordered a jug of Cuba Libre. To us it felt late as we'd been on the night bus, but an inspection of the watch said it was only 10.30am, [View Full Entry]

So, it was finally here, my trek to Maccu Pichu. I wasn't on the Classic Inca Trail as i'd heard this was getting a bit commercialised and there were much better available (or i'd been drinking too much in South America and forgot to reserve a place. Only 500 people a day can go on this, and that includes 300 porters and staff). Anyway, it worked out better, i booked a longer trek called Salkantay, which is becoming the one to go on. It was just voted best alternative trek on the planet by National Geographic....not bad! However, i really should [View Full Entry]

Machu Picchu back to Cusco South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
This is just going to be a short note, since I only have 1/2 hour before we leave for dinner and I haven´t been to my room yet. Actually, I have no clue where my room is, this hotel is really confusing! Train ride back up from Machu Picchu was nice, we actually got a fashion show by the train crew. Tonight we go to a restaurant where we can watch some folk dancing. I´ll have some free time tomorrow, so hopefully I´ll be able to do more then. [View Full Entry]

This is our fourth day in Peru and it´s day 17 of our holiday. We flew to Lima and had an afternoon and a night there. Big polluted city . . . not very nice hotel . . . hmmm that´s about it really! Then we flew to Cusco - the stop off point for those doing the Inca Trail etc. Cusco is like a cross beween Florence and Dehli (how do I come to that conclusion having not been to either????) full of churches and beggers. Well they aren´t exactly beggars, just poor people wanting to sell you things you [View Full Entry]
