Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Ohhh boy... Not a good day! It began with all of the best intentions. We were supposed to take a bus back up to the eastern slope then begin a bike decent westward towards the sacred valey. Well, I´m not sure what happend, perhaps some bad logical in my decision making, but I some how got seperated from my group and ended up in paultambo (sp?) alone. I made the assumption that the group would arrive in the same city as I, but after a two our wait I realized things had gone bad. I suspected the team took an [View Full Entry]

What an environement, can´t say I´ve every been exposed to the jungle. This quite exciting. It´s almost always raining drizzling precipitating in one way or another. Plant life in all manner is extremely aboundant yet still fragile. The photos don´t do justice as I ran into some technical problems with my camera (since been corrected.. I think) We climbed about 500 meters up a jungle slope, whick basicaly ended with a muddy deriere assisted decent with a tropical waterfall and bath ending. Scenes of Indiana Jones and Roamancing the stone kept popping into my head. [View Full Entry]

At just after 7am the blinding rays of the sun forked above the towering mountain overlooking the ancient lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. A few of us gathered at the site of the original sundial, which captured the falling rays, its only blemish being a corner missing, carelessly knocked off by a visiting film crew some years ago. We wandered around the maze of largely empty buildings and terraces and breathed in the quiet spirituality exuding from every nook and cranny. The location is simply out of this world, majestic beyond belief. It has to be our top site/highlight [View Full Entry]

Hi All, We started today with a 5 hour bus ride up to the eastern ridge of the andes mountains. We were delayed by several bouts of motion sickness within our group (as all roads turn to dirt 2 miles out of only the largest cities) After a brief pickick lunch we begain our bike decent into the the jungle cloud forest (always cloudy... always) One of our team members took a nasty tunmble which took her out for the day. Another team member then split his lip in a similar fashon. Alessandra opted for the bus after making it [View Full Entry]

Manu Jungle Hotel

- FOOD: Excellent food on the tour, especially the soups and supplies of popcorn. Live termites that taste of mint. Animal shaped biscuits (so yummy) and Sublime bars - we're addicted. - AREA: In the jungle, the mighty jungle.... WOW. A must experience. Everything is huge - including the spiders. Such a variety of plant and animal life, but didn't see any anacondas still. Mountain biking, white water rafting, canopy sliding and staying in wooden lodges in the middle of the jungle. - PEOPLE: Fantastic tour group. Apart from them, we didn't see many others except for the lucky few that [View Full Entry]

Very much in the a.m. tomorrow, we shall be departing for km88, the departure point for the Inca Trail. Which will mean I´ll not be blogging for a few days. Probably won´t have very much to say for myself when I get back either - it was amazing, trek quite hard but good, cold at night, definitely recommend it, that sort of thing. I´ve big-time been looking forward to this. I´ve seen the list of names of people in our group. All English-speaking (if you can say that about Americans), mostly girls I think, about a dozen of us. I´ve bought [View Full Entry]

Better and better South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Got my luggage this morning. Straight home after for shower and change. Felt like that Tom Hanks character in Castaway afterwards, after when he´s rescued. Or The Elephant Man when they put him in a suit, although he was still quite ugly, poor chap. But given that bump on my head from the embarrassing incident (Stop telling people, Elizabeth) it´s a fitting comparison. I should have mentioned earlier perhaps that Cusco is great. And, if you´re going to visit, June is the month to do it. It´s festival season. You can barely turn a street corner without being confronted by hordes [View Full Entry]

- FOOD: The best hot chocolate in the world in Jack's Cafe. After a lovely crackling and alpaca starter in a posh restaurant, the Peruvian delicacy, guinea pig, was ordered. Luckily arrived not in it's usual form of legs sticking up and head attached. Strong meat, but picky and fatty. A once only experience. - AREA: Big market selling lots of food and crafts. Easy to barter! Amazing Inca ruins through relatively unused routes, with so many terraces. Stonework better than Machu Picchu dare I say it. Very impressive cathedral back in Cuzco - with NICE statues but a Tiger Lily [View Full Entry]

Today we have a day to rest. I think everybody needs it. We are all happy we all made it all the way on the trail . What an experience it was. The day was spent wandering around the city and enjoying artisian craft shopping. Peruvians make some of the most beautifull handicraft. [View Full Entry]

All that and more South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
- FOOD: Well deserved huge pizza after walking for hours. Coffee and cake on the first class train back. - AREA: WOW, worth it's status as a prime tourist site. Amazing, smooth rocked architecture, cool acoustics, stunning forested mountained backdrop, spiritual rocks. Climb up the famous Waynapicchu mountain and down to the Temple of the Moon through jungle scenery. - PEOPLE: Not too many to begin with but a mass of American tourists by the end. Excitable adults on the first class train back when the 'entertainment' came on - an alpaca fashion show! - WEATHER: Glorious sunrise over [View Full Entry]
