Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
Amazing...that's the only way to describe Machu Picchu! People kept telling me how cool it was, but until you go there you don't ever realize how right they were. I left Cusco by train for the town of Aguas Calientes. Aguas Calientes is the last town before Machu Picchu (if you can even call it a town, it was about 2 square blocks in size nestled in the Sacred Valley). The following day we hiked up to Machu Picchu to catch the sunrise and beat most of the other tourists. There are shelves of books attempting to tell the history of [View Full Entry]

A shopper's paradise! South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Well, it's been a while since visiting an internet cafe due to isolation. Just finished the Inca trail yesterday (see next journal). Arrived in Cuzco last wednesday afternoon, where we met up with my bro Glenn who had flown in from England. We pretty much got settled into the hostel, went out for dinner, did a bit of shopping and then back to the hostel for our Inca Trail briefing. We were due to be picked up at 6.00am in the morning. This morning we wandered about Cuzco and did more shopping, before flying to Lima this arvo. Cuzco is buzzing [View Full Entry]

Spectacular Scenery! South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
Last Thursday we set off to walk the 33km Inca trail which was to lead us to Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Inca's. The 3 of us were the only one's to book with Inka Wasi for this time, so were fortunate to have "personal service" so to speak. We had a guide, a chef and 5 porter's to carry all the gear. We stopped at Ollantaytambo to get supplies, pick up the porters, and buy the last minute essentials for the trail... walking stick, drink bottle holder and coca leaves. The Inca Trail is a branch off the [View Full Entry]

"Dead Woman's Pass"

Today was travel a day. We left our homebase hostel in Cuzco (not sure if I mentioned it, but this hotel (structure) must be at least 600 years old) built on a side of a mountain (as most things are in this region, for lack of flat land) Flight to Lima was smooth and uneventful. As expected Lima was covered in its perpetually gray winter sky. The city is a stark change from Cuzco, which in retrospect has done a very good job in preventing media advertising from being pasted allover its buildings and landscape. Lima seems more like a free [View Full Entry]

Pisac today South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Pisac being a small town in the Sacred Valley, at about an hourīs (absolutely horrendously sickening) bus ride from Cusco. There was a market, half local, half tourist. We took seats in the balcony of a cafe overlooking the lot. Fab view, with the tips of the Inca ruins just visible and all the hustle and bustle beneath. Old women kneel on sheets with foodstuffs laid out around them for sale. While one biddy was off weeing in the streets or something (they do this, saw it with our own eyes, like two-year-olds in nappies, just crouch when they need to) [View Full Entry]

Bienvenido a Cuzco South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
ĄHola, mis amigos! In case I havenīt told you as of yet, I am currently in Cuzco, Peru, where I will be spending the entire summer. As with my last trip, I will be sending out periodic updates with pictures and a story or two. Unlike last time, however, I will try to use this free travelblog site to do the dirty work, instead of emailing everyone directly. If it works pretty well, I will continue using this... if there are problems, I will either find another travelblog site or go back to the individual emails. Anyway, for those of you [View Full Entry]

As expected, the Inca Trail was fantastic, as was Machu Picchu. Truly amazing. One thing I hadnīt anticipated was the variety of microclimates you go through. We saw so many different animals and flowers and things. This made the whole trek interesting, as well as the ruins you see on the way, and the thrill of walking on real Inca road. Machu Picchu was awe-some (I added a hyphen so you hopefully wonīt read it with an American accent.). Itīs the setting. Those mountains... I dashed around from room to room, stroking everything, pausing only to stare up at the Andes. [View Full Entry]

Sitting in a pasta restaurant with Denise during the height of the Inti Raymi Festival parades at 9 o'clock at night in Cusco the ancient capital of the Incas, I look out the window onto some curving stairs to find umpteen men peeing in a steady stream, which cascades down the hill into the ancient Inca drainage system! One can imagine this has been the practice since the 1400's! Now I know why they built it with such meticulous detail! Fortunately Denise is facing the other way. We arrived early in Cusco as we had to prematurely evacuate Bolivia during the [View Full Entry]

Party time (or not) South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
- FOOD: Rehydration salts, an ok Chinese, the best hot chocolate in Jack's cafe, the best bacon and egg roll in Jack's cafe. - AREA: Party time at 'Sexy Woman' for Inti Raymi (Inca festival) - been to better parties but not many as colourful as this one.... or as crowded. BINGO on the bus to Nazca (at last!) - PEOPLE: Many in colourful costumes pretending to be Inca people. MANY on the hill watching these people. Sad goodbyes to my friends. Excitable locals playing bingo on the bus. Fri 24th June: I certainly wasn't feeling great but armed with rehydration [View Full Entry]

The tout in Cusco (the main tourist town in these parts) assured us there was no way of getting to the Sacred Valley except by taking his 'official' tour, so, being seasoned scam spotters, we promptly dismissed his overtures and wandered down to the local bus station and got on the first bus for $1 and, lo and behold, it went all the way to and through the Sacred Valley! Mind you, getting back at the end of the day was a bit of a nightmare as hundreds of people were waiting for the bus (which was only small) and when [View Full Entry]
