Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Best Day Ever South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Today was the best day ever. My friend Katie has a really awesome host family. Very loving, warm, etc. They invited me over today. So this morning I got up and took a freezing cold shower because it is a special occasion to be invited to someone´s home. I spend most of my days in a greasy fog because I´m too cold to shower. And I got to take my first bus ride in Peru. A different setup, but awesome. I´m glad Katie met me in town because no way could I have figured it out myself! All the stop names [View Full Entry]

Ollantaytambo South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
This morning I got my internal flight from Lima to Cuzco high up in the Andes. It was pretty spectacular flying over the Andes and Cuzco itself is surrounded on all sides by the mountains. I was met at the airport by one of the TAPA staff, and we took a taxi to Urumbamba where TAPA have their HQ. We they continued on to Ollantaytambo where I´ll be based (avoiding the rocks laid across the road at various points, which had been carefully placed a day before as part of a ´general protest against transport´. Ollantay is quite something, surrounded on [View Full Entry]

Striking, Peruvian Style South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Nothing like a little strike to round out the week in Peru. For the last few days we´ve had little strikes. No cabs/ticos/combis in the morning. They´ll work again for an hour at lunch, but nothing else. This is important because no one really has a car, so public transportation is far more common. I for one like the bus route called Blanco Jesus, Spiderman, Batman, and my friend Katie takes Sr. Rapido. The buses aren´t numbered, they are given names instead. So today was the big nationwide strike. I live right off the main plaza and my school is on [View Full Entry]

After all of our skiing, we were off to Peru!! We headed to Cusco - the main town for hikers to Machu Picchu to congregate and head out. Really nice, relaxing town. We loved it! We stayed in a fantastic hostel called Los Ninos. It was founded by a German couple who started a hostel to sponsor some of poor children in Cusco. Giving them jobs and teaching them important skills. All the rooms are named after the original children sponsored, and much of small cost to stay still goes towards chilren [View Full Entry]

Climbing Pisac South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
o yesterday I climbed up Pisac, 5km straight up with this girl from my school. It took a long time and was steep and Über scary. I don´t really like heights and ledges with really far drops, but that´s cool, I made it. There are a bunch of ruins from the Incas. The irrigation system still works and was unbelievable. Incas were way head of the Romans. Overall amazing, I think. But first, let me tell you about the trip itself. We head over to the bus station Sunday morning. Um, lets just call it authentic. We get in line with [View Full Entry]

Adios Cusco South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
The last days of Cusco! As Cusco wears on we are really looking forward to some new experiences. This city is becoming annoying with all the people trying to sell you something, you can’t relax in the plaza with a book for more than a few minutes without someone trying to sell you something or shine your shoes or get you to eat in their restaurant. The best way to avoid this is the internet café’s and hanging out at the school or just keeping moving. I can’t wait to shed my ever present day pack, get some real exercise and [View Full Entry]

There is a rooster South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
that crows every morning at 6am to alert me to the day. I love it! Every lunch the grandma has fresh squeezed juice of some sort. Or, Cecelia, some girl that must work in the house washing our clothes (without a machine and washing our dishes in the outside sink) must make the juice. So good! Yesterday was passionfruit, today was starfruit. I also eat a lot of this fruit that is named chichichi or something like that. Very very good. In the morning we just drink tea or like powdered chocolate milk or something. And the girlfriend of the dad [View Full Entry]

¡Hola todos! Grab a cup of coffee, it is another long one. By the way, thanks for all the positive feedback on the blog so far. I am no longer having trouble with uploading photos so enjoy. Thursday, June 30th The first week of Spanish classes are coming to a close for us and sitting in class for 4 hours every afternoon while the city of Cusco hums and buzzes is not an easy task. Add to the fact that I have spent most mornings this week trying to sleep in and recover from being ill and feeling weak only to [View Full Entry]
