Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Weekend in Cuzco South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
I decided it was time to investigate Cuzco (the largest (and only) city near/in the sacred valley). I took the bus on Saturday morning to Uru and then on to Cuzco. The buses here are pretty unique... they pack as many people on as possible, then shove in an extra 3 or so before slamming the doors. The buses always wait until the last possible moment to leave, so by that time, there are normally several grumpy men calling 'vamos' (pronounced 'Bammoss'), 'lets go'. Occasionally people also bring sheep and various other animals onto the buses. 2 to 3 hours of [View Full Entry]

Street in Olly

As the week went by I felt more confident and settled about the teaching... I felt a bit nervous during the first few lessons, but I find that confidence grows quickly. I stuck to the theme of sports and games with all off the classes for the remainder of the week... gradually refining the lesson I was giving. I got the classes to do some fun activity focus excercises too, such as charades with sports. I made a few learning's this week, such as: donīt hand out a worksheet and then try and explain it (they wont be listening!), and encountered [View Full Entry]

Chicken Little South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
So today I wake up and itīs cloudy out. The Peruaņos are in a flutter because itīs July and in July itīs winter and itīs not cloudy. Itīs not allowed to be cloudy, I mean come on, this is July after all. And then, all you know what breaks loose... It starts to rain... This starts a whole other process. People are staring at the sky in shock, like something bad is about to descend. And everyone is saying, this canīt be, this is July. It doesnīt rain in July. It just doesnīt rain in July. And theyīre slinking along next [View Full Entry]

1st Day Teaching South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
Carlos (one of the TAPA coordinators) turned up at the house at 8.30 to introduce me to the school. I'll be teaching in the local secondary school in Ollantay. There are about 400 students and 20 or so teachers. I was introduced to Angella... she's the Peruvian English teacher at the school. She speaks fairly intermediate English... although it's very good for round here. Carlos took the first class, on "to be" with the younger students. After he'd left, I took the same lesson with the next class. Later on I transitioned on to doing a lesson on Sports and Games. [View Full Entry]

I spent my first weekend in the small town of īPaucartamboīat the īfiesta de Carmenī, a traditional Peruvian festival. I went with Anna (the other TAPA volunteer staying at Lolaīs) and Carmen (who acted as our guide, most useful!). Paucartambo is a 3 hour minibus ride from Cuzco, (Cuzco itself is 2-3 hours drive from Ollantay), along a very dusty mountain dirt-track. It was pretty hairy looking out from inside the minibus, when bearly a meter to our left was a sheer drop! The fiesta got underway on Saturday afternoon, when īthe Carmenī (see pic) was brought out from the church, [View Full Entry]

Best Day Ever South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Today was the best day ever. My friend Katie has a really awesome host family. Very loving, warm, etc. They invited me over today. So this morning I got up and took a freezing cold shower because it is a special occasion to be invited to someoneīs home. I spend most of my days in a greasy fog because Iīm too cold to shower. And I got to take my first bus ride in Peru. A different setup, but awesome. Iīm glad Katie met me in town because no way could I have figured it out myself! All the stop names [View Full Entry]

Ollantaytambo South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
This morning I got my internal flight from Lima to Cuzco high up in the Andes. It was pretty spectacular flying over the Andes and Cuzco itself is surrounded on all sides by the mountains. I was met at the airport by one of the TAPA staff, and we took a taxi to Urumbamba where TAPA have their HQ. We they continued on to Ollantaytambo where Iīll be based (avoiding the rocks laid across the road at various points, which had been carefully placed a day before as part of a īgeneral protest against transportī. Ollantay is quite something, surrounded on [View Full Entry]

Striking, Peruvian Style South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Nothing like a little strike to round out the week in Peru. For the last few days weīve had little strikes. No cabs/ticos/combis in the morning. Theyīll work again for an hour at lunch, but nothing else. This is important because no one really has a car, so public transportation is far more common. I for one like the bus route called Blanco Jesus, Spiderman, Batman, and my friend Katie takes Sr. Rapido. The buses arenīt numbered, they are given names instead. So today was the big nationwide strike. I live right off the main plaza and my school is on [View Full Entry]

After all of our skiing, we were off to Peru!! We headed to Cusco - the main town for hikers to Machu Picchu to congregate and head out. Really nice, relaxing town. We loved it! We stayed in a fantastic hostel called Los Ninos. It was founded by a German couple who started a hostel to sponsor some of poor children in Cusco. Giving them jobs and teaching them important skills. All the rooms are named after the original children sponsored, and much of small cost to stay still goes towards chilren [View Full Entry]
