Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Well, the early morning wake-up to beat the rush was well worth it. We hiked in the dark for about an hour to reach the Sun Gate where we had our bird's eye view onto fog. I don't think I've ever woken up this early before to see fog, but yes fog exists at 6AM. Sarcasm aside, it really was worth it because as the sun rose, the fog dissipated and this stone fortress appeared out of nowhere. That's a great way to see Machu Picchu for the first time. It's the reason to do the 4 day trek and not [View Full Entry]

Feliz Compleaños a mi! Today Atticus (friend from California) and I went to the train station; Tracy es infermo (sick). She is feeling altitude sickness. She is sleeping so she feels better for Machu Picchu. The train station is like an American Department of Motor Vehicles. You take a number and wait to be called. We waited for about 20 minutes to speak with an agent only to find out that they were sold out for Friday. YIKES! Ok, this was really hard for me because I am really a planner and looked into buying tickets months ago, but was told [View Full Entry]

This was our longest day of hiking - over 10 miles. We started the day with a long climb up that seemed to wake everyone up. After about an hour, we reached the first pass of the day where we took the opportunity for some silly picture taking. After that, we descended on a series of Incan stone steps. And we went down, and down, and down, and down some more. There were a few ups (to a second pass), but it was all down. On one of the uphills, I was able to catch up to the Billy Goat. He's [View Full Entry]

I woke very early today... while wandering why I had set my alarm for 5am, I remembered that today, we had planned to seek out the hot water springs of 'Lares'. Our first move was to take a bus to Urubama, and then on to the town of 'Calca' (halfway between Urubama and Pisaq). Heading to Calca bus terminal, we found a potato truck, who's driver said he was going to Lares, and would let us come along for 5 soles. Lares is about a two to three hour drive along a mountain dirt track... it really was a special road, [View Full Entry]

Hola Amigos, Tracy and I arrived in Lima at 5:30 this morning only to wait in line at customs and at baggage claim, so of course, we missed our 6am flight to Cusco. Thankfully we had Atticus to translate and get us on a new flight at 9:30 am. We arrived in Cusco within the hour, and the views of the Andes mountains were unbelievable from the plane! Our hostel is very cute. It has a beautiful court yard to sit and have mate(tea made of coca leaves....said to help with altitude sickness) We are feeling very tired from our overnight [View Full Entry]

Bang! That's the pressure in my head now that I've had a few moments to unwind after one hell of a grueling day. Today was our shortest, but toughest day. We ascended over 1200 meters to a peak of 4200 meters. For all my American friends, that roughly climbing 4000 feet to an alititude of almost 14000 feet. The air's thin up here folks. Actually, I had fun during the climb. It was mostly Saggy Buns and I at the front with the Scottish Billy Goat. He's a quiet guy, but he seems nice enough. I'm having a bit of a [View Full Entry]

I don't know if it was excitement or having slept too much the night before, but I had an awful time getting to sleep. This made our 4:30AM wake-up rather difficult for me. Fortunately, we packed everything the night before and met up with our tour group without incident. Our guides are Homer ("Jimmy"), Hebert, and Hilda. We have a large group of 19 very nice people. There are Scots, Aussies, Danes, Germans, and of course Americans. Our first day wasn't too strenuous, but it was a lot of fun just hiking and shooting the shit. I am also very excited [View Full Entry]

On Monday I took several of the lessons myself, as Angelica was precoccupied elsewhere in the Coleigo. Angelica is good at keeping the students in order, and giving them moral lectures as and when necessary. But unfortunately my Spanish is still quite basic, which makes these elements of classroom management pretty difficult when I teach solo. Things got a bit noisy today. My teaching plan for the durration of my stay is to focus on 'Interests'. So far we´ve covered Sports, Games, and I´ve now moved on to Music with some of the classes. My strategy has been to use these [View Full Entry]

Oh my god!! Did I really sleep for 13 hours? At 9AM, my travel mate, Saggy Buns, woke me by speaking my name. My bleary eyes opened to find him already dressed and ready for breakfast. The breakfasts here have a lot to be desired. The toast is not really toast at all - just some airy crumbs. Anyhow, we spent the morning having a lazy lunch at Tunuupa where we had an excellent view of the main plaza here, Plaza de Armas. Nice views and the buffet was extremely filling as I pigged out! Hey, I'm gonna need the calories [View Full Entry]

Inca Weekend South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
On Friday night I met up with Alex in Cuzco, to go and listen to a traditional Peruvian concert. Some of the singing was in Quechua (the Inca language), and there were some interesting instruments, including charangos and what I can only describe as 'coiled snake horns'. On Saturday I bought a 'bolletto touristico', (a ticket that gets you into all the main tourist attractions in the Sacred Valley), and set out to explore the four main Inca sites near Cuzco. I caught a Pisaq-bound bus out to the furthest ruins ´Tambo machay' (ceremonial baths), and walked back to Cuzco, stopping [View Full Entry]
