Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

The 'Panpipe kids'
On Monday, Anna came along to see the school. The day went pretty well, and I got through more than planned with most of the classes. On Tuesday Angelica, the Peruvian English teacher was on a course in Cuzco, so I had to take the classes alone. This proved to be quite a challenge as my first time teaching solo, but things went ok. In the evening, I tried to help Melissa out with her maths homework. They´d set some pretty difficult work, it was very reminiscent of the' surds and indices's' stuff we did at the start of our A [View Full Entry]

Plaza de armas, Cuzco
Plaza de Armas, Cuzco

Hi Michelle, Yep, I arrived in Cusco yesterday and settled into a cozy room at the Hostal Familiar. Today is a beautiful day here, bright mountain sunshine with big puffy white clouds that leap down at you. Tomorrow I´m renting a dirt bike from the boys at Inca Motors, right accross from my hostal for a return trip down the Sacred Valley, to Ollantaytambo and back. This morning as I walked down Calle Saphi, I was reminded of why I love this place - the scent of wood smoke, beautiful textiles hanging outside the artesana shops, pan pipe music drifting through [View Full Entry]

On the way to Cusco from Lima
So no matter how well traveled you are, there can come a time in any trip where you just hit a brick wall. Where out of nowhere, you just can't go on. I am at that point. I am supposed to be on a tour of the Sacred Valley right now, and I could not get myself out of bed this morning. It took all I had to get up at all today. I was fine on Friday. We flew from Ayacucho to Lima, then here to Cusco. I was a little worried because the girl I am seeing back home [View Full Entry]

Horse Riding South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
This Sunday, myself and Anna had booked to go Horse Riding, with a chap from Ollantay known as 'Mario'. A guide (not Mario) turned up at our house in the morning with two horses. After resolving some initial complications (the guide not speaking English, us not speaking much Spanish, and both of us being slightly concerned that the guide didn´t appear to have a horse- were we going alone?) we mounted our horses. Our trip was to visit the Inca Quarry, up a mountain-side near Ollantay. The horses seemed reasonably well behaved to start with. I didn´t really have a clue [View Full Entry]

Our Day Out South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
Myself and Anna decided it would be a nice idea to take Hullio (a lad from Cuzco who lives with Lola) and Mellisa (one of the kids from the School, who sometimes works for Lola), to some of the sights in the local area. We decided to head for the Inca Terraces at 'Moray' and then to the Salinas close to Urubama. Originally, the plan was to walk across country from the first to the second... but it was quite late before we got going, and since none of us had a clue where to go (maps seem to be a [View Full Entry]

I got ill South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
After the marching was over on Tuesday, the school had the rest of the week off as holiday. I was planning to go to Arequipa in the south of Peru and then on to Nazca. Unfortunately, living in Peru caught up with me, and on Tuesday evening I felt very feverish. I wasn´t any better by Wednesday, so I asked TAPA to take me to a Doctor. I had to have an injection (in my backside, yes it hurt!) to bring my fever under control. After some tests, they decided that I´d got a couple of stomach infections. After the doctor [View Full Entry]

Marching Day South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
The long expected marching day had come... the principle had had the students practising their marching for nearly a week now. Everyone gathered in the school early in the morning. I stood in front of the pupils with the rest of the teachers, which suddenly became rather awkward when they began to sing their national anthem and I didn't know the words! The principle then gave a long speech, of a very nationalist nature from what I could understand. The plaza of Ollantaytambo was completely packed with people, students, teachers, local government, locals, tourists. There were speeches, [View Full Entry]

And it wasn´t a pretty sight... But luckily in Peru you don´t need a prescription for Cipro, or anything else for that matter. And my host dad set me right up with it. I´m not going to lie, it was bad, really bad... And the water was shut off, so that wasn´t a pretty sight in el baño either. I eat off the vendors in the street all the time, no problem. The one time I go to the ¨safe¨ tourist restaurant, they try to kill me!!! However, I almost made it to the end of my trip without getting sick, [View Full Entry]

Lunch

Hossay, Lola´s friends, the priest, Carmen, Lola and Hossay´s son.
Today was the 'cumpleanos de carmen', and my only full day of teaching this week. When I got back from the school at around 2 pm ish, some of Lolas´friends, and the local priest came around to the house. The rest of the day was spent eating and drinking in honour of Carmen´s birthday. Lola had made some fruity Chicha... really really thick stuff, but very nice. I went to bed feeling the most full that I've felt for a very long time. Food is very important in this country. Lunch consists of a large amount of soup followed by a [View Full Entry]

Weekend in Cuzco South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
I decided it was time to investigate Cuzco (the largest (and only) city near/in the sacred valley). I took the bus on Saturday morning to Uru and then on to Cuzco. The buses here are pretty unique... they pack as many people on as possible, then shove in an extra 3 or so before slamming the doors. The buses always wait until the last possible moment to leave, so by that time, there are normally several grumpy men calling 'vamos' (pronounced 'Bammoss'), 'lets go'. Occasionally people also bring sheep and various other animals onto the buses. 2 to 3 hours of [View Full Entry]
