Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Airport Trinkets
Airport Trinkets
This is what I have to show for after 2 weeks?!
The trip back to Cusco was pretty uneventful - just some tired bodies that were too tired to take any more pictures. The ride back was really bumpy and dusty, and I even thought I might lose it, but I held on for everyone's sakes. The only thing to note was after these 2 weeks, for some reason we decided to have dinner at a chinese restaurant. Big mistake for me. Well, not that big. My food just wasn't any good - that's all. So, the next day, I got up early (5AM) to catch a taxi to the airport and [View Full Entry]

So today, we got up early for our first foray into the jungle. The morning began with a huge rain storm that we waited out before going. After the rain lightened up a bit, we climbed up and up to this small peak where there is an observation tower. I was a little hesitant to climb up this metal death trap while it was raining for fear of a lightning strike, but there seemed to be a lot of concrete between the metal stairs and the earth. Anyhow, once we got to the top of this 150 foot behemoth, we were [View Full Entry]

What a wonderful way to wake-up - to the sound of a roaring river surrounded with natural light. There are probably on 2 better ways to wake up, but that's a different kind of blog. (Angelina Jolie, if you're reading this, call me!) Breakfast was simple, yet elegant and delicious, consisting of granola, an egg omelet and bread. Ok, my definition of elegant has really gone down hill on this trip. There was also cinnamon-laced hot chocolate that was awesome. Anyhow, with Stinky Buns not feeling too well, the guide, Silly Buns, and I took off on our morning walking tour [View Full Entry]

Now, why would you stand right in front of the sign!? Work with me, people!
Today, we set off to the Manu Biosphere in the Amazon rainforest. This sounds so exciting, but first we have to spend the entire day in an SUV to get there. The roads are poor in this country making the ride very bumpy and uncomfortable, but hey I can rough it! :) Anyhow the ride is mostly uneventful, but our guide, Ingrid, is very nice and points out a lot of flora/fauna along the way to keep us interested. Eventually, we make it into the preserve where we hop onto mountain bikes made in the late 80s and sold at Walmart. [View Full Entry]

Not all days can be perfect. Your travel destination can't always shine. Sooner or later, the bad comes out with the good. But, you can't let it get you down. We started by having our B&B hire a driver for us to Pisac where they have a famed arts and crafts market on Sundays. Once we got there, the driver informed us that the fee only include a 1-hour wait even though we told the B&B that we wanted to stay until the late afternoon. Of course, if we paid more, then we could stay longer ... Anyhow, I guess the [View Full Entry]

Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
After a few hours sleep, we rose to catch an early bus (a short walk from our hostel) up to the ruins. We got up to the entrance at about 7 am. The horizontal Rays of the early morning sun gave a real atmosphere to the forest-covered mountains. The mountains surrounding Aguas Calientes are really steep, and completely covered in cloud forest... they make quite a contrast to the dry rocky mountains surrounding Olly. We opted to take a guided tour of the ruins, so we'd know a bit of the background behind what we were looking at. Entering the sight [View Full Entry]

We woke up at 5:30 because we were to be shuttled to the bus that would take us to the train that would take us to Machu Picchu. We were excited, but tired. We arrived at Macchu Picchu at around 11:30, along with half the world, it seemed. It was very crowded, so we took a different route to explore the famous Incan ruins. This proved to be a good choice because we were alone for the first half of the exploration. Of course, I took like 200 pictures. It really was amazing to see. It was not the spiritual experience [View Full Entry]

Music in Olly South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo
On Friday evening one of my students, 'Jackeline', had arranged a concert at which she sang. I was pretty impressed with the whole set up, sheŽd obviously put a lot of energy into getting the thing organised... all the equipment, spreading the word, and getting an accompanying band along ('Incas del Arpa' (Incas of the Harp)). There was a nice atmosphere, although Peruvians have this really strange custom of lining the edges of the 'viewing area' as apposed to gathering in the middle! Ollantay is a really good venue for a concert, a stage down in this little village, surrounded on [View Full Entry]

Aguas Calientes

Sorry for the delay. I think when I last wrote, I was crawling on the floor to a bathroom that had no water in order to get sick. My experience with the Peruvian healthcare system was, well maybe we should we just call it "special". It was comprised of a morning at school, stretched out on 5 chairs pushed together for my exam. I then wandered around looking for a lab to deliver my "specimen". My first parasite. I was excited. It's like the Red Badge of Courage for those in development work. As my final week of classes drew to [View Full Entry]
