Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

machu picchu!!!! South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
alright, I did the one thing that everyone does - machu picchu yesterday. i must admit, it was a nice place, unbelievable views. though i think tikal in Guatemala is more grand. well maybe, ah who knows. ok here is how it went. machu picchu is expensive, no and or buts about it. the train from cusco is $69, so we took a bus from cusco to orubamba (sp) for $2 and then took the train from there to agua calientes, the starting point for machu picchu. you cant get to auga calientes by bus. ok, there were seven of us [View Full Entry]

Day Tripper! South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
Today I went to the Sacred Valley of the Inca’s with Ed, Dave and Nadia. It was amazing and only a taste of what Manchu Pichu is going to be like. The terraces are massive, not like the small flimsy looking terraces that they currently make and use. The ruins were amazing the way the Inca fit the rock together with out mortar. I climbed to the top of a small peak behind the main citadel it was a nice little 4-low 5th class scramble. The rock is really sticky! I would love to do some real rock and mountain climbing [View Full Entry]

September 4, 2005 Cusco, on most maps spelled Cuzco, was originally spelled Qosqo and pronounced like Costco. Did you get all that? Cusco was named the most beautiful city in the world this year. The city flag is 1 color different from the gay pride flag. Our contact says they are trying to change the design but it hasnīt been approved so far. We are met at the airport by our hostess, Melbin. Yes - thatīs actually her name. We have 3 tours scheduled for the next 3 days so we take it easy this afternoon. We walk around the square [View Full Entry]

Cuzco Inka Tour South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Today was our pre-booked tour of a few notable archaeological sites in Cuzco and surrounding area. With our second full day in Cuzco, we had a choice of either touring sites in the sacred valley, or sites around the city. I had a slight preference for the sacred valley, mostly for the scenery, but we got a few glimpses on our way to MachuPicchu, so I relented to Mike's desire to see the sites around town, including Saqsaywaman, the old Inka fortress that he wanted to see. We booked the tour during our first day in town, with a small tourist [View Full Entry]

Cusco Bound! South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
My last evening in Ayacucho was one of my best…… doesn’t always go that way. A big group of us went for the hike up the hill to the cross. It was a great work out and my ass is felling it now. A few of us went out for a proper Pisco Sour after dinner, I can’t believe it took me three weeks to try a Pisco they are damn good. Saturday morning I got up at the crack and headed to the airport. Off to Cusco. I was kind of wondering if I really wanted to go to Cusco [View Full Entry]

MachuPicchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
This was a long day. Not only tired from the flight and lack of sleep, etc., we had to get up early (5 AM) to get the taxi to the train, which would take us to MachuPicchu through the sacred valley. We definitely took the most comfortable route, in the Vista Dome train, with other foreign tourists. Our seats were at the front of the rear car - kinda crappy, cause most of the view ended up being behind us. But, it was definitely worth the extra cost for larger (and cleaner) windows, and windows on the roof. The trip out [View Full Entry]

Sunrise over Cuzco
Sacred Valley
Rio Urubamba

Our flight landed in Lima last night, adn we were immediately accosted by the Tourist Information people. Iīve never seen anyone push "free tourist information" with so much determination! They offered to reconfirm our flight for free (since itīs high tourist season, and sometimes things happen), but were surprised to find that we already had boarding passes for our connecting flight to Cuzco. They immediately asked us what we were doing, and had we booked our train tickets to Macchu Picchu yet: "Itīs high tourist season, and you might not be able to get a spot", etc. They offered to che [View Full Entry]

Hey Its been a while since my last update so here goes i have done quite a bit so if you donīt have time right now save this blog for later! Huaraz Huaraz was fun... we actually took some time out to chill which was nice for a change! On Ivans birthday we booked a 16Km trek to Lake 69. This was an interesting day.....early start with late bus as usual! The lake is set in the Cordillia Blanca so the journey to the national park up to the start of the trek was very impressive. It actually reminded me of [View Full Entry]

It was like the ice-creams in Dumbos, it was as good, if not better than we expected! And for the first time ever i was actually speachless!! We caught a train to Aguas Callientes (litterally meaning hot water thanks to the natural hot springs found there) At 6am from Cusco and arrived at around 3ish. The train ride was surprisingly nice, well the parts we were awake for were, the scenery was beautiful although i did spot a magot infested dog carcas on the side of the tracks! Aguas Callientes was just as beautiful with imposing mountain ranges surrounding the town [View Full Entry]
