Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Well we did it and managed what is arguably one of the hardest treks we have yet undertaken. It was a very long hard 8 days and 7 nights, even with the help of 7 mules, 2 mule drivers, a cook, a guide just to support 4 people. We ended up with the organizer a great lady from US and then SJ and me. Day 1 and 2 - Were ONLY!!! 7 hour walking days to get to the first set of ruins named Choquequirao. This is supposed to be one of the final stands for the Incas as their empire [View Full Entry]

City of the Incas South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
Well after 6 days and 4 buss journeys of 10 hours+ across the center of the Andes, ahh poor Sarah and Jason I hear you all cry... We have finally landed in Cusco to check out the center of the old Inca Empire. The town is one of the more beautiful places we have stayed, but also one where you get hassled the most. The city is considered to be the longest inhabited locations in all of South America. The Spaniards built directly on top of the old Inca city, and this has made for the most interesting colonial architecture centers [View Full Entry]

Last Days in Peru South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
So my last day in Cusco was Saturday the 10th. I slept in till 8am, lounged around the hostel drinking coffee and catching up on e-mails. My main focus for the day was to walk around exploring Cusco and buying a gift or two for my mom. I spent most of the day wandering in and out of shops in the San Blass district. I found some lovely shops; one of my favorites was a chocolate shop that made chocolate out of coca leaves. The use of the coca leaves has been part of the Peruvian society since the beginning of [View Full Entry]

Better late then never! My last day in Peru did not go as planed therefor I am late with the Machu Picchu update, I beg your forgiveness. So Thursday (the 8th) we arrived in to Aqua Caliente in the late afternoon. Freddy, our guide, got everyone squared up at their hotels and showed us were to meet for dinner. I was the only one staying at my hotel out of our group. The hotel sat partway up the hill and had a nice view, however, no hot water and to think the name of the town means hot water, go figure! Trekking South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
We started our trek off really early in the morning on Monday the 5th. We had a very interesting buss ride to a small town called Cruzpata. The buss went off the paved road and put her into low drive to chug it’s way up a switchbacky hill/mountain. In Cruzpata we collected our backpacks and climbed into the back of a truck that took us farther up the hill. There we had a small breakfast before we started the trek. Plans had changed over night for our trek and our group was now nine people, the three originals, me, Evi and [View Full Entry]

Survived the Inka Trail!! South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
Hey Well I successfully completed the Inka trail even though I felt pretty crap most of the way through!!! In total that is 50Km of trekking!! We went with a company called SAS which were really good, the guide Fredy was very funny! The most impressive thing had to be the amount of food they gave us, each meal was freshly prepared with at least 3 courses! Was pretty amazing considering that they only had a camping stove to use! It was all worthwhile, despite feeling crappy and tired most of the time i really enjoyed it. The first day of [View Full Entry]

Hola amigos, ...rano 8:30 po *klasickych ranajkach* pre nas prisiel autobus (az pred hotel..hm) a vyrazame na celodennu tour do posvatneho udolia Inkov. Posvatne udolie je asi 15 km severne od Cuzca a preteka cez neho rieka Rio Urubamba. Prva zastavka je dedinka Pisac - vstupna brana do posvatneho udolia...Po polhodinke stravenej na miestnom trzisti stupame do starobyleho inckeho mesta ktore lezi asi 600 m nad dedinou. Asi tak okolo 12:00 konecne odchadzame a ideme na obed do dediny Urubamba odkial pokracujeme do dalsieho inckeho mesta s nazvom Ollantaytambo. Mesto je plne nejakych musiek [View Full Entry]
