Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Fiecare va merge in ritmul lui, nu ne alearga nimeni asa ca o sa ne descurcam. Avem 2 ghizi, 20 de carausi si un bucatar, expeditie in toata regula ce mai. Well here we are in beautiful Cuzco. Surrounded by mountains, this charming town of terracotta tiled roofs, winding cobblestone streets and stone masonry incorporating the earlier Inca Citadel, simply takes the breath away. Partly because at 3,400m above sea level it really is difficult to breathe when you first arrive. Cuzco is famous as the jumping off point for Macchu Piccu, so tourism is very big here. Every building on the central Plaza De Armas and surounding streets is here to serve the tourist. Either selling package tours, hiking gear, local craft or with a stairway leading [View Full Entry]

Cusco On 19th October, I had just over a week to go in South America. I have to get to Santiago on the 29th, but still not been to Peru. I hadn't expected to spend so much time in Bolivia, but have no regrets. However, I did want to go and see the Inca capital of Cusco and the "Lost City" of Machu Picchu. I took the bus up from Copacabana. After a slightly farcical border crossing (it would have been easy to get into Peru without showing passport and then returned to Bolivia) we headed to Puno, then up to [View Full Entry]

From Puno I went to the lovely gringo-filled city of Cusco. My introduction to the place wasn't the best because the bus broke down and was really late, the person that was meant to greet me from the hostel wasn't there and when i made my way to the hostel to get my room that i booked and paid for in Puno, i found that my room wasn't booked and paid for and the hostel had never heard of the person that organised it for me. I'd been swindled! The hotel was full so it meant a lot of wandering around, [View Full Entry]

After yet another long bus journey on unmade roads we arrived in Cusco, which is a really lovely City, if a bit crammed full of gringos. It is an odd mix, with colonial buildings sprouting out of Inca foundations, and llamas on street corners with brightly coloured tassels in their ears. After a few days of exploring nearby Inca ruins in the rain (finally our luck with the weather broke..), we started on the Inca Trail. After being a little undecided on whether to book or not (you have to do it with a tour company as part of a group, [View Full Entry]

I can happily confirm thatr, having seen many differant spellings of this on signs, it doesnt really matter how its spelled. So no dissent!! We have finally managed to go on the Inca Trail, three months after booking it, and can tell you a few things. 1. Its not very difficult 2. noone should be able to cook food that good in a tent 3. the ruins are, indeed, breathtaking 4. gringo toilets are disgusting our group was fantastic, our guides were more than competent, and (unlike in Bolivia) we never had to sit for hours waiting for our stuff to [View Full Entry]

Well we got back to Cusco last night after a train back from Machu Picchu and what a beautiful train ride, it really is a gorgeous valley. We showered (finally!!!!YAY!) and went to get some food. We were pretty buggered but we wanted to try guinea pig (cuy) and alpaca and so we arranged to meet Rob, Jason, Maryke & Pascal. Maryke & Pascal could not make it (passed out) so the four of us went. We found a nice restaurant and Rob & I ordered alpaca, while Jason & Matt got guinea pig. mmm not sure if the cuy was [View Full Entry]

The Lemon Meringue Pie The last time we left you we were on our way to Cusco and having been on a bit of a whirl wind tour of Peru so far, we decided when we arrived in Cusco weŽd just take a few days to chill and aclimatise to the altitude and sus out the tours and sights we wanted to see. We also went along and checked out the local markets which were quite interesting to say the least everything is set out in trades, rows of fruit and veg, then rows of stalls selling chocolate, then flowers then [View Full Entry]

Cuzco has been our home for two weeks now, through thick and thin. It is a muy fantastico place. The colonial/Incan hybrid architecture is truly staggering, and the setting is epic. The Incans were marvellous stonemasons, especially considering that they worked with nothing more than what is essentially iron ore. Using such dubious tools, they produced stone walls with no gaps or mortar - each stone is fitted perfectly. Their walls posses a chaotic beauty because all the stones are of an irregular shape and size, with some having as many as 22 sides. And then the Spanish came and killed [View Full Entry]

Have arrived in the city of Cusco. Sorry Buneos Aires you have been relagated to number two spot. Cusco is wonderful, filled with true Peruvian character. The colours are amazing! Have been on a bit of a shopping spree, bought a rather expensive potato but its a long story and the potato turns out to be a mirror with the most wonderful carvings around the side...hence the potato! The markets here are filled with great handmade products and I think we might be in trouble with baggage. Within one hour of landing we had purchased an additional bag for all the [View Full Entry]
