Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
In an effort not to sound ungrateful. Machu Picchu is beautiful. Better than beautiful, impossible. But, here´s my story. I took this seminar through Wanamey and Associates, and included in the seminar was a trip to Machu Picchu, so I didn´t think much about it and haven´t made plans to go to Machu Picchu otherwise. Maybe as a Spanish teacher I have read Neruda´s ¨Heights of Macchu Picchu¨ one too many times, maybe the seminar coordinators should try to get there and back in a day, maybe I should have tried to take a more active role in my planning, and [View Full Entry]

My classroom in Bartolome de las Casas Center and my teacher. He was great!
So this week I attended a seminar with Wanamey Consultores y Asesores. The people in charge were friendly, but the rest of the class canceled at the last minute. They managed to scrounge up some students from the local university to attend at a discounted rate and it all turned out lovely. I came out better than I would have been in a class full of tourists by being in a class full of local guide students. They had a very good foundational knowledge of the material and asked great questions that I wouldn´t have thought of. The first day, the [View Full Entry]

At the start of week 2 we headed to Cusco but the strange thing was we had to fly north back to Lima then get another flight to come South again to Cusco! Bizarre! Arrived in Cusco mid afternoon where it was warm and sunny and we had the rest of the afternoon free to explore this beautiful city. In the evening we were given a small bag to pack what we needed for the 3 day Lares Trek which would be carried by a mule! The Lares Trek is a 35km walk and is an alternative to the Inca Trail [View Full Entry]

Peru madness South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley
Packing done and ready to roll. We're heading to Cusco to start a 6 day bike journey through the sacred valey. Most likely we will be knocked out by the altitude sickness and the imense amount of bugs we will be facing. After this there's the Inca Trail. We will rest one day at Yucay and leave towards the holy Inca grounds. If the biking and the cloud forest mosquitos don't consume us, the 4 day and 32 km walk to Machu Pichu will certainly do the job. We will do some post here during our the trip, so feel free [View Full Entry]

Cusco, Part 2 South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Okay, so last time I had just arrived at Aguas Calientes for the night, Wednesday night, before going on to Machu Picchu in the morning. I decided not to climb Wayna Picchu, the mountain overlooking Machu Picchu, due to exhaustion from the past 3 days. I was feeling fine, just very tired and worn out. And bug bitten, but those have mostly healed now. I didn't feel like dealing with the crowd and the lack of sleep, so I got to sleep in until the luxurious time of 5am, unlike the hikers who got up at 3:30am. I went with the [View Full Entry]

My boyfriend and I are going to Peru August 21st. We are doing the backpacking and shoestring type travel and we need to know if we have to reserve a trip to Macchu Picchu in advance? We don't have time to do the Inka trail, we were wanting just two separate day trips. Can we just show up in Cusco or Aguas Calientes and book a guide or bus or train for a day trip or two to MP? Has anyone been there recently? How expensive? Thanks! Angela [View Full Entry]

Moray and Salineras South America » Peru » Cusco » Moray
At the lovely Acupari Language School we had a field trip last Thursday to Moray and Salineras. It was great except for the snow, everyone speaking German, and the rain. Moray is this amazing Inca agricultural experiment. The Inca built terraces at different elevations in circles to achieve slight differences in climate. Then they planted different species of crops and different variations of each crop in an effort to develop better plant genetics in the foods that they were planting. It is both visually and intelectually amazing. Our stop was cut short by a downpour and I nearly fainted [View Full Entry]

Salineras

It has been an interesting three days. Some things have been great, and other parts have been more "adventurous". Monday morning I met up with the group I would be doing the Inca Jungle trail with, and they are all great. There is a group of 5 Chilieans from 2 different families, 3 Irish, 2 English, 1 Peruvian, and 1 American (me). In total, 12 of us and then with our guide, Frank, we make 13. We're all between the ages of 17 and 23, except for the Peruvian, we're not sure how old he is. Basically, everyone gets along really [View Full Entry]

Cusco I love you, you could never bring me down
So, I thought I should probably do one last blog entry to update those readers (those that exist...?) about what happened to me and Rose (and why I could no longer face updating this blog afterwards). Ok so we left off in Cusco, the wonderful cobbled, bus-trailing, tourist trap and haven that is Cusco. In Cusco I was hopsitalised for Altitude Sickness, I had to breathe oxygen from a tank for over ten hours, it was boring. However, on my return to the hostel we were surrounded by fantastically short-lived friends (well, some of them at least). Sometimes I struggled to [View Full Entry]
