Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

I just though this guy was cool.
I have to keep reminding myself that I've only been here a week. It's odd because there are times when I feel like I've been here forever and other times when I'm still overwhelmed by the newness of this whole experience. Classes started this week. I'm taking 6 credits of Spanish, then 3 credits of Community Development, 3 of Latin American Politics and 3 of Art and Art History of Peru. All of them are being taught in Spanish so I'm a little bit nervous about that but so far they seem good. The professors have been going slow because there [View Full Entry]

The dizzy heights of Cuzco South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
So day 3 kicked off with a flight from Lima to Cuzco. And what a flight, an hour of looking out the window at the Andes. The view was just amazing. The taller mountains were covered in snow at the top and you would not believe where some people live, there are settlements in the middle of nowhere right in the mountains. cant quite imagine what life like that would be like, pretty dull i guess. I was first off the plane when we got here courtesy of a front row seat, so the first thing i done was bomb it [View Full Entry]

After Salkantay, we gave ourselves a few hours of rest and then set off for our next adventure, Manu Biosphere. Rest is overrated anyway, and we were really excited at the thought of spending eight days in the jungle. Having been born and bred in the tropics, I thought that the insect factor would not really faze me- I was going to be proved very wrong indeed. Read on, reader... We left at 4.30 am (another early start) and set off in a coach - there was a dozen or so of us. The Manu Biospehere is a protected reserve in [View Full Entry]

Machu Picchu South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu: 31st August - 1st September 2009 One of our goals is to visit places that are out of the way. Machu Picchu seems to fall into that category, but only because we live in Hong Kong. In reality, the Machu Picchu money machine chugs efficiently with smooth transition points and bilingual assistance exactly where required. So, there are no difficulties in the actual process, except for maybe some altitude sickness. Petra, in comparison, is a zoo: hawkers, camels, horse drawn carriages coming at you in a full gallop, garbage everywhere, kids begging, drivers over-ch [View Full Entry]

Lima to Lares: 25th - 31st August 2009 Peru was our first stop in South America.  Neither of us has ever been to South America, so we didn't know quite what to expect when we arrived.  Our first stop was Miraflores, a very nice suburb of Lima overlooking the Pacific.  Once Erik arrived, we quickly headed up to Cusco, the former capitol of the Inca Empire.  Cusco means "navel" in Quechua, the language of the Incas. (I could try to describe Cusco, but frankly, I'd never be able to touch the eloquent description in “The Motorcycle Diaries”, an account by Ernesto [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Cuzco South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
Today is only my second day in Cuzco and I already love it! The city has about half a million people, from what I heard from my taxi driver in Lima. Seems like a good size and it feels that way. From what I can tell so far there is lots to do here but nothing is too far away. I spent yesterday hanging out with the three other student who arrived early. There was Kelly from the Oregon, Kyle from Cali and Lynsey, also from Cali. Spanish was of course our first topic of conversation. Who had taken what classes, [View Full Entry]

Having arrived in Cusco on Saturday afternoon I promptly left again on Sunday morning to embark upon a 3-day adventure which included a 5-hour downhill mountain biking trail into the jungle on the first day, a 7-hour hike through the winding valley between Santa Teresa and Aguas Calientes on Monday before the climax of the adventure on Tuesday... a full day in Machu Picchu, the ancient, mountain-top Inca city. The mountain biking was great fun for very little effort as we plummetted almost 1000m and climbed virtually none! The scenery was incredible and changed so quickly from Alpine-like [View Full Entry]

La Veronica - the starting point for my jungle adventure
In the jungle
Hiking through the valley to Machu Picchu

OK, I went to Machu Picchu twice, once with Rupal and once with Annu. Rupal and Annu did not overlap very much, so we only managed to have one trip to Lake Titicaca together. The first visit was definitely chilled out as we took the taxi-train-bus option. The second, much more hardcore, as it involved camping and hiking. More on these adventures later. Ollantaytambo The train leaves from a town called Ollantaytambo. Somehow, it is much faster to go to Ollanta than taking the train from Cusco itself due to a combination of steep terrain and Perurail. Ollanta itself is a [View Full Entry]
