Background: Ancient Peru was the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably that of the Incas whose empire was captured by the Spanish conquistadors in 1533. Peruvian independence was declared in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORI's election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the president's increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime. FUJIMORI won reelection to a third term in the spring of 2000, but international pressure and corruption scandals led to his ouster by Congress in November of that year. A caretaker government oversaw new elections in the spring of 2001, which ushered in Alejandro TOLEDO as the new head of government; his presidency has been hampered by allegations of corruption.

And we arrive in Cusco! The ancient capital of the Inkas and today the Gringo capital of Latin America. "Gringos" is the word they use here for North-Americans and Europeans. It is an amazing city! Great places to have breakfast, lunch, dinner. Fantastic peruvian coffee! And here is the centre for organising your trip to the trails of the Inkas or to the jungle of the Amazon! First we stayed in a small and cheap hostal in San Blas, a neighbourhood in Cusco. But we had our own bathroom, (usually) hot water to shower and 5 beds to sleep in! (because [View Full Entry]

Moray and Salt Mines South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco
This is just a quick post so that I can put up some pictures of Moray. It's a really cool Incan ruin in the Sacred Valley. Just a little info on it. There are three circle different sites at Moray. Only one of them is fully reconstructed. For a long time people didn't know what they were used for and speculated that they were containing or channeling energies. The thinking being that you would sit at the bottom and you could "go to other dimensions." Later they notices that they were only finding different seed types on each level with different [View Full Entry]

The Inca Trail South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail
I really don´t know where to start with this blog, i have had such an amazing 5 days. But lets start at the beginning. On saturday we all met up at the tour company´s office for a briefing of our trek. upon arrival we had to hand our passports over so they could make a copy. here comes the problem, my inca trail permit was booked under my old passport number and they told me i may not be let on the trail. thankfully, after asking me to go and lie to the police so i could obtain a police document [View Full Entry]

On the bus to Machu Picchu
On Wednesday 08/26/09, we got up and headed down for breakfast, checked out (the hotel would hold our bags), and headed back up to Machu Picchu. It was more crowded than the previous afternoon; the bulk of visitors are there through noon. We explored the city at our leisure, going into houses, rooms, ceremonial chambers, looking down at the plazas, and just admiring the place. Around 11am, we headed over to the Inca Bridge, located past the Guard’s Gatehouse. On the way, we stopped at a terrace, with some trees and rocks, perfect place for a break or a picnic. It [View Full Entry]

Ollantaytambo Lodge
On Thursday 08/27/09 I woke up feeling sick and weak. We got dressed, went to the hotel’s cafeteria for breakfast, and then I just collapsed in one of their lounge couches. I’m not a whiner and have a high threshold for pain and fatigue, so if I say I need to rest, it’s because I REALLY need it. Ben and Cathy were good sports and watched TV for about three hours while I napped, the meds doing their work. I woke up feeling better and with enough energy to climb the archeological site of Ollantaytambo. The town is noted for being [View Full Entry]

Entrance to Convento de Santo Domingo
Friday 08/28/09 we got up as late as we could to still be able to get breakfast at the Inkarri’s café. Then, we walked over to the Qoricancha, or Gold Courtyard, the most important Inca temple in Cuzco, dedicated to the adoration of the supreme Inca god, the Inti (Sun). Qoricancha is also said to have been the Inca’s main residence (Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire), as the Inca was a demi-god. Cuzco, or Qosqo, means “The navel of the world” and Qoricancha is at its center. Both are World Heritage sites. The Incas were very knowledgeable in [View Full Entry]

Breakfast at the Inkarri's: Cereal with yogurt and fruit and orange juice.
On Tuesday 08/25/09 we got up at 5am, had breakfast, and were out the door at 6:30am to take a taxi to nearby Poroy to catch the Backpacker train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the bottom of the mountain where Machu Picchu is located. There are no highways to Aguas Calientes, located 110 Km (about 64 miles) from Cuzco, so the only options from Cuzco are train, Inca Trail, combination car ride/train ride/hiking to towns along the way, or helicopter flights (which we hadn’t really seen or heard about, maybe they’ve been discontinued). For rail, there are three options: The [View Full Entry]

The Andes at sunrise
We arrived in Cuzco on Sunday 08/23/09 very early in the morning, around 7:15am, and were picked up by a representative from Hotel Inkarri, where we had reserved a “Triple room” with a full-size bed plus a twin bed up in the loft. We had taken the anti-altitude sickness pills Sorochji (sp?) about ˝ hour prior to our flight, so we didn’t have any of the symptoms of being at 3,400 meters (~11,150 feet) above sea level other than feeling totally oxygen deprived. It hadn’t even been two minutes since we had gotten off the airplane when Ben said—to no one [View Full Entry]
