These animals belong to the Llama family and are protected due to near extinction.
The Colca Canyon formerly held the title of the deepest canyon in the world. However, it is no longer “officially” a canyon, due to its width-height ratio. Many people argue that it is just an enormous valley, but this is highly disputed amongst Geologists. Whatever its title, it is very impressive, twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, approximately 3000m deep.

After a five hour bus journey from Arequipa, we stopped at the point along the Canyon, famous for sighting Condors. We were fortunate enough to see five soaring up above us.

We enjoyed a short walk along the side of the Canyon before returning to our picturesque Hotel and its friendly resident Llamas, shortly followed by a trip to the local thermal baths!
