Being within a few kilometers of Paraguay when I visited Iguazu Falls was enough to spark my interest in this landlocked country of which I knew very little. It took another 24 hour coach trip to reach the capital, Asuncion - we initially retraced the route back to Iguazu, then crossed the Parana river into the Paraguayan border city of Ciudad del Este, where were immediately immersed in rows of shopping centres, which are frequented by Brazillians and Argentinians for their cheap electrical goods. The remainder of the journey was mostly through flat farmland (Paraguay is 1 and 2/3 times bigger than the UK, but with only a tenth of the population). The coach was boarded on occasions by people selling "chipa", toroidal shaped breads with cheese and aniseed - a Paraguayan speciality of which I ... read more

We didn´t know much about Paraguay before we arrived. Most people travelling round seem to miss it off their itineries and guidebooks don´t really list it as being a tourist hotspot. When chatting to a taxi driver in North Uruguay, we told him we were going there and he laughed through his thick handlebar moustache, peered out from under his beret and told us in spanish, barely recognisable due to a strong accent, that Paraguay was ´very rustic´. Well, we were intrigued, and so, leaving the small town of Iguazú and countryside of Argentina, we crossed through Brazil and into Paraguay, arriving in Ciudad del Este, famously known as the blackmarket shopping capital of South America, where we were greeted by ten lanes of solid traffic, largely consisting of Brazilian shoppers hopping over the border in ... read more

15th March ’13 A short side trip to Paraguay Today we took the local bus across the border to Cuidad del Este in Paraguay, well it seemed a shame to be so close and not go and have a look. Amazingly we got on the bus a few yards from our hotel and an hour later we were in a different country! The journey should have only taken 30 minutes but the traffic was mad and made madder by six lanes trying to get into two! About half the passengers got off and just walked it, and it was a long way but they still beat us. We crossed over the Parana River on the Friendship Bridge and it was hard to tell one country from the other by the scenery but once we passed immigration ... read more

Paraguay My rating: 5/10 Daily budget (travel, food and accommodation): USD $60 = 39 pounds When: 24 January - 27 January 2013 Base: Asuncion Main sights: Independence House, Cultural Centre of the Republic - Town Hall, Railway Museum, Pantheon of the Heroes Random facts: Paraguay was the 1st country in South America to declare independence. Former dictator Dr Francia was so convinced everyone wanted to kill him that he slept in a different bed each night. He also rebuilt Asuncion in a grid system, destroying countless historic buildings along the way, to remove hiding places for would-be assassins. Ciudad del Este is known as the Supermarket of South America. This crazy border town is where Brazilians and Argentinians go to buy fake goods, gadgets and drugs on the cheap. Geo: -27.1392, -55.7252The bus ride proved remarkably unevenful. The bus didn't start at Igazu but arrived from somewhere else to go on to Posadas so our seats had already been in use and were a bit messy with crumbs etc but the were comfotable enough for a 5 hour ride. The bus stopped in various little towns along the way, each of which had its own mini bus station. And lunch was provided - unappetising cheese/ham/salami sandwiches, a piece of cake and fizzy orange squash! Our fellow travellers were young back packers, the French couple we'd met going to the falls, a scruffy young English couple travelling non stop to Bolivia and then up to Costa Rica to teach on spec and lots of locals getting on and off, families and individuals. The bus station in Posadas ... read more

Hi Everybody! It is a long way down to Asunion, capital of Paraguay. Our first impression of the city was one of disappointment. It is very dirty with graffiti decorating many buildings and walls. Some of the skyscrapers are stained and discolored from pollution. Sections of sidewalk are often missing or cracked. Putting that aside, Paraguay was beautiful from the air. We could see fields of green and plots of forests. As we approached the city, we could see that it was located on the E. banks of the Paraguay River. Paraguay has had a sad life. It has been ruled by dictators and other corrupt officials. People seem to accept this as a fact of life. Paraguay is the second poorest country in South America. We have seen many destitute people and have been surprised ... read more

Passado o Natal, começam as promoções.

Pereinu per upę ... read more
