La Colmena was established in 1936 by Japanese inmigrants. Nowadays, the little town is a weird mix of cultures, cuisine and lifestyles. Reaching La Colmena is fairly easy with several daily conexions from the Asuncion Coach Station.

In La Colmena, you have hotel facilities in the name of Fukiyama (not sure how to spell) with private ensuite facilities and breakfast included. They have a little restaurant too so if you are not staying overnight, you can still enjoy their food.

The landscape around La Colmena is really nice, lots of green and low range hills. A must do is a hike to the Salto Cristal waterfalls, ask locals for more details. Another feature is the wide range of local fruits available. It could be argued that this place is the main producer of fruits in the entire Paraguay. People watching is cool too. It is amazing finding nikkei (Japanese born overseas) in this tropical place where everything says Latin America (bare footed people, horse drawn carts, and so on).

Mind that it is a rather quiet place, take books and your ipod!!
