So this might be the strangest place I have ever been...ever.
So lets look at the facts:
1) it is in the middle of nowhere (the Chaco)
2) it was founded and still populated by German decendents
3) it is in a desert (this means lots of germans with red faces) and everyone has a green lawn
4) it is stuck in the 1970s
5) to get here you have to go through a Canadian Menonite community
You mix that all together and you get one weird place. Admittedly at the same time it is kind of neat and I am enjoying myself, but seriously weird stuff. Nothing quite like looking like a local when you consider where I am... but these Germans speak Guarani... go figure!
The bus ride here was long and interesting. It included the bus breaking down and then everyone being herded into cubevans for the last leg of the ride. I was so squeezed in tight on a cushion in the back of the cube van I kind of felt satisfied that I had found a place that was at least similar in difficulty as travelling in Africa. Except here all the
20 somethings were drinking beer (at 10am) and getting wasted. That is something I never saw in Africa, I guess you could say the ban on alcohol in Islam saved me from so very possible trouble.
