Out of the Desert and into the Jungle

February 27th was my last day in Ajman which I spent with my friend Rebekah on the beach. She then set me on my way from Dubai airport.

4 days later, after a logistics stop in Redhill, a bus, a plane and the back of a truck, I finally arrived in St Cuthbert’s Mission, Guyana with Candice.

Guyana is the only English speaking country in South America and it’s spoken with a Caribbean lilt. All round Guyana has a more Caribbean than Latin feel. We are staying in an Amerindian (the indigenous people) village not too far from the capital Georgetown. My guide book says there are two things to do in St. Cuthbert’s Mission: swim in the creek and visit the Craft Centre. We regularly bathe in the creek, along with the laundry, and .. well .. we live in the Craft Centre! (It has unfortunately closed since my book was written!) We get electricity from 6 till 10 pm supplied by the Community generator, but have to use our neighbour’s pit latrine and bucket bath. I now fall asleep listening to crickets - instead of honking horns - and wake up to the cockerel crowing - instead of a concrete pump or piling rig.

Some things remain the same though - I’m still covered in sand!
