Annai Travel Blogs

Background: Originally a Dutch colony in the 17th century, by 1815 Guyana had become a British possession. The abolition of slavery led to black settlement of urban areas and the importation of indentured servants from India to work the sugar plantations. This ethnocultural divide has persisted and has led to turbulent politics. Guyana achieved independence from the UK in 1966, but until the early 1990s it was ruled mostly by socialist-oriented governments. In 1992, Cheddi JAGAN was elected president, in what is considered the country's first free and fair election since independence. Upon his death five years later, he was succeeded by his wife Janet, who resigned in 1999 due to poor health. Her successor, Bharrat JAGDEO, was reelected in 2001.

Goodbye Annai

South America » Guyana » Annai
Today is our last day in Annai so we ate and headed to the clinic early as possible. Patients kept showing up as we were trying to close down. Bill and Christine had to catch a flight back to Georgetown so that they could finish the surgeries that didn’t get done last week. We were getting worried that we would have to turn patients away but they finished just in the nick of time and headed to the “airport.” The airport in Annai is actually the bar a Rock View and a dirt runway. David, Dad, and I got everything [View Full Entry]

The Reunion

South America » Guyana » Annai
Every morning in Guyana seems to be basically the same. Get up early, eat breakfast, and head to the clinic. We saw around 30 patients today with nothing too exciting happening. There were busy times, when David brought in patients from distant villages, and slow times when he was out picking up more patients. During one of the breaks Dad and I roamed around town for a bit looking at a store and searching for a telephone. Along the way I made a friend and he followed us back to the hospital. I saw him roaming the halls so I [View Full Entry]

A New View

South America » Guyana » Annai
Lethem To Annai Becky We are leaving for Annai today, but not until we see more patients in Lethem. After our French toast breakfast, we arrived at the hospital around 8:30 a.m. I got started checking in patients again and dropped off several stacks of results with Terrence. When all the patients had been seen we headed to Mrs. Foo’s to pack up our stuff and load it on the truck. We met our driver, David, and hit the road with some box lunches. There are no paved roads in the interior so for the entire 2 hour trip we [View Full Entry]
