Background: The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999. Although Ecuador marked 25 years of civilian governance in 2004, the period has been marred by political instability. Seven presidents have governed Ecuador since 1996.

Hola!! OK.... here are some (there are millions!) of the photos from the Galapagos! :o) Spent a few days here in Vilcabamba in the lovliest hostel - its cheap, soooo beautiful with a swimming pool, amazing views, hammocks, loads of facilities... but best of all it is run by Germans which means.. German food! :o) We have been indulging ourselves in Kaesespaetzle and Currywurst!! Yummy! :o) Just been relaxing by the pool, learning Spanish, watching Harry Potter in Spanish and hanging out with lots of lovely English people we have met! :o) Tomorrow we are heading to Peru... its going to [View Full Entry]

What a beautiful day! Today during girls program, we took all of the girls to a park so they could have a day off from working. First, they said it was ‘muy cerca,’ and let me tell you, the definition of cerca (close) for an Ecuadorian is very different than mine. It was a 20 minute walk, but it was a 20 minute walk completely uphill (and it was pretty steep the whole way). So when we got there, after getting a really good workout, the three of us volunteers were extremely exhausted, but the girls were ready to run around [View Full Entry]

banos is an amazing town!! there are so many adventure sports guides, and we are with possibly the craziest- Jose and his two dogs!! yesterday first thing we went for a bridge swing, which involved a full body harness, three ropes, diving off a bridge to swing back and forth below it!! it was brilliant, and incredibly scary free-falling waiting for the rope to kick in!!! only five of us did it and my insides were like jelly but it was a great feeling after- adrenaline high!! then we went canyoning which was just fantastic. We swam in cool clear waters, [View Full Entry]

One of my new responsibilities this week is to run a study hour for the Colegio girls at night with another volunteer. We split up the group in half, so I work with the primer curso girls (7th grade), which I was excited about because I already have two of them in my computer class right now. Being twelve is such a tough age, and I’m not sure why, but I love working with middle school age kids. I loved it in Utah and I really love it here. Anyway, These kids are in the study hour because they almost failed [View Full Entry]

hey all!!! don´t have a lot of time to recount my adventures so here is a brief overview.... travelled to Misahualli in jungle sunday, hiked through jungle monday but it wasnt near as humid as in peru!! our guide made us eat lots of different plants and inspect every spider on way past. we stayed in jungle lodge with lots of hammocks, went to visit Indian family who showed us how they hunt for food, rained all night deterring the insects from invading our room. Monday we went for another hike eating more plants and visiting the local school where we [View Full Entry]

We have finally been able to, or more truthfully, gotten round to setting up a travelblog. Hopefully it will be informative or even slightly entertaining for you to see what we have been up to and where we are going next. The trip started as you all know in Lima, the not so scary capital of Peru, we came before but did not see much more than the airport and a bus terminal. This time we went to the quite posh area of Miraflores (full of tourists) and found a supermercado like they have in France and bought food we wrongly [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone!! Philip and I arrived in the Galapagos islands on Wednesday morning, met some Canadians, an Italian and an American guy in the bus and we all searched around for the cheapest hotel once we got to the Santa Cruz island (the biggest island). We eventually found a nice hotel for $10 which is a bargain for the Galapagos islands! I bumped into some Americans (who first gave me the idea of going to the Galapagos islands independently instead of doing a cruise) and an English girl who I had met in Quito but unfortunately whenever I bump into them [View Full Entry]

Cherie and I are now back on the mainland after an incredible time sailing around the Galapagos Islands. We have seen sharks, turtles and all types of iguana and tortoise as well as swimming with sea lions which was incredible. However, we were conscious that this is not the sort of email people want while they are sitting in their offices at work. so to brighten up your day we can tell you about our first near death experience. Day one on the boat and after a beautiful afternoon and even more amazing sunset we set sail on our 16 person [View Full Entry]

Well teaching is still pretty crazy!! I’m starting to get my kids to behave a little better. My eight grade class is tough because it is a really big class and there are about ten students that don’t listen to me at all! I don’t know what they are thinking when they think they can just get up and walk around the classroom or talk as much as they would like! I’ve tried doing some fun games with them this week and their behavior was terrible... I don’t even really care to talk about it!! Some reason they think that when [View Full Entry]
