Today we are off for a full day to Silver Island. It is about 20 miles off the coast of Puerto Lopez. Should be a fun day. Everyone is feeling better but the weather is not that great - cloudy and only about 20c. ... read more

Monday, August 16....Puerto Lopez...the weather is overcast and about 23c....not overly warm (we were hoping for a little more heat as it’s not really beach weather). It’s some sort of provincial holiday here today - we watched the parade go down the dirt road in front of the hotel. We spent the day exploring the town and walking along the beach. The kids went for a swim in the ocean and collected sand dollars. Not sure what our plan is for tomorrow as a couple of the kids are suffering from upset stomachs. Love to all, Brad, Kathy, Alysia, Brian, Kirsten, and Coulton ... read more

Sunday, August 15 ....we’re heading to the coast to find some sunshine and heat! After two sleepless nights in Banos, we are back in Quito awaiting our flight to Manta and then onto Puerto Lopez on the Pacific Ocean. Banos was an interesting place to see but two days was enough...especially with rainy, cold weather and the bar below our hotel room. The first night the music didn’t stop until 3am and then we were awakened at 6am by noise of the backpackers who couldn’t find rooms and slept in the lobby. The next night wasn’t much better. Brad and I took a 3 hour tour of several waterfalls around Banos while the kids explored the town and rode go-cart around town. We took the 9am bus from Banos to Quito which turned out to be ... read more

Thursday morning came and I said my goodbyes and caught a bus to Baños for a nice lunch, then headed to Quito where I had about an hour to eat before getting on my overnight bus to Puerto Lopez on the coast. I was a little worried about taking the night bus solo but all was fine, aside from the driver stopping every hour to break. I didn´t get much sleep. We got in 2 hr earlier than planned, which meant a 5 am arrivial to a foreign place. Thankfully I had a hostel in mind that was only a few blocks away. I met a couple of Austrian girls who were on my bus and heading to the same place. Thanfully they answered the door for us and let us leave our bags inside and ... read more

We had a couple of days of dreary clouds and drizzle but today is sunshiny! All of a sudden we have a lot more energy. ;-) Those rain boots that Kwesi said we had to bring have come in handy. Meghan: “We are not getting and taking rain boots” Kwesi: “I’m not going without them” Kwesi was right. Thursday and Friday we painted and planted a garden for a community centre in a small town nearby called Puerto Rico. It’s a town of 500 people that come from about 10 families. They have a beautiful church made of bamboo and next door is this community centre. Kwesi helped to paint the first day (white wash) and I got to help choose the plants for the garden. It was interesting choosing plants when you have no idea ... read more

We are in a place called Comuna Las Tunas. The eco-lodge is called: Azuluna. Their website: www.azuluna-ecuador.com It's close to Puerto Lopez. It’s a very cool place. Both in the meaning “hip” and “cool”! Kwesi and I have our own beach house complete with hammock. That’s where Kwesi is right now… He is trying to write his journal. ;-) We can see the Pacific Ocean from our door. It’s a grey and drizzling day today. Yesterday was beautiful. I would guess it’s only about 20C outside. Kind of odd for being around the equator at sea level! We didn’t expect that. I think it’s because the cold water from the artic comes up here. Apparently we have a good chance of seeing some whales on Sunday during a boating trip. I can’t wait. Yesterday we had ... read more

Traveling through Ecuador by bus is certainly not as nice or as easy as traveling through Colombia. Granted, it is definitely cheaper, but the buses usually suck… there are no bathrooms on the bus (even long distance ones), no A/C (open your window to cool you off, even though it’s going to piss off the people behind you!), and they are really old, rickety, and often smell bad. What’s more is that it seems like you have to change buses a hundred times just to get from one city to another. As I said before, it took 5 buses to get from the mountains in the middle of the country to the coastline. Well, our trip from Canoa to Puerto Lopez was ONLY coastline, but it still took several forms of transportation: 1 bus to San ... read more

The other day Ryan and I compiled a list of things we are starting to miss about the States. Of course there are the obvious things: Family, Friends, and for me, my dogs. But then there are things that we didn't really expect to miss that we have realized that we really miss a lot. Here they are, in no particular order... 1. Good cheese- The majority of the cheese you find in South America is the same... white, slimy, spongy, really gross-tasting cheese. You can find small blocks of cheddar only in select grocery stores and it costs an arm and a leg... and I am going to consume grotesque amounts of it when I get back. 2. High quality beers- Although Ryan has found one or two that he enjoys down here, they are ... read more
