Background: The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999. Although Ecuador marked 25 years of civilian governance in 2004, the period has been marred by political instability. Seven presidents have governed Ecuador since 1996.

Day 2 Today we were extreme tourists visiting all the cathedrals, museums (that were closed), markets, churches etc! In the morining we bought our bus ticket to Lima, which was a challenge as the travel agent didn't understand English and we didn't understand Espanol fully! In the afternoon we walkied around the Old town after an interesting experience getting squashed on the city's trolebus! We got some great views and found a Hare Krishna Temple......yes you can find a temple anywhere in the world! That was really spiritual...... Next stop was Parque Itchimbia.....our pre-inca trail [View Full Entry]

So the last few days havenīt been overly exciting, but I donīt mind. Our Spanish lessons have been going well, and today the teacher took us to the market (which is very close to our hostel and we had no idea it existed) and taught us some relovant words and generally conversed in Spanish. Iīm really proud of myself for initiating the hostel switch, since the other one was more about partying and fun it was somewhat out of character for me to be the one wanting to leave while Nancy wanted to stay, but Iīm trying to take this trip [View Full Entry]

Day 1 The flight was extremely long and tiring but we made it to our first destination. We had a near miss of our flight in Madrid because we didn't realise the time difference! The welcome in Quito was great apart from the rain which followed us from the UK, hopefully the weather will get better the further South we go! Mum's theplas and chutney was a filling meal last night! lol [View Full Entry]

hola ill start off by describing the city a bit more. there are lots of neighborhoods.. obviously.. but most tourists really frequent only two of them- the old town and the new town. the old town is exactly what you would expect- lots of old, beautiful spanish churches in buildings. but it used to be a pretty unsafe so a lot of the tourists stayed in the īnew townīand still do to this day. this is the part of town with all the banks, internet cafes, hostels, bars and clubs, etc. pretty much anything a tourist would need. however, a few [View Full Entry]

More view from the roof

We left for dulles at about 1am for our flight and waited around until 5. the rumors that were heard about taca were definetly not true, atleast not for us. all of the flights arrived and left on time and our luggage all made it to quito when we did. plus, we actually got food on all of our flights, even the 45min one, which beats most of the american characters. once we got there, someone from the foundation met us and took us over to our meeting and we learned some more about what we will be doing out on [View Full Entry]

New hostel

South America » Ecuador » Quito » Quito
Hola! So today we moved into our new hostel in new town, itīs called Dos Palmitas. The price ended up being a little more than we were told before ($20 for the three of us when we were told $6 each) but we were too tired to argue about it. Itīs got nice hardwood floors and cable tv, but the bathroom is a one room shit shower and shave type deal, and Iīm pretty sure they donīt have hot water. So that will be interesting. Iīm at an internet cafe 2 blocks away that is open until 8pm, and the hostel [View Full Entry]

Although it is tough to come to grips with...a month has just passed by on my trip, meaning that it is half done, and with every passing day, I will have travelled more than what I will be able to travel. Colombia was amazing. It is a real shame that it has the reputation that it does, because there was never once when I felt in danger. I think that it just needs more people to travel there, and spread the word, and eventually, people will be able to travel to Colombia without the stigma of Colombia being such a [View Full Entry]

We have arrived!

South America » Ecuador » Quito » Quito
So yesterday was a looong day. We left Vancouver at 3pm Tuesday and arrived at our hostel around 11pm Wednesday. Our flight got in at 8:50, but they had 3 flights landing at the same time so the line for customs was insane. We also had a 6 hour layover in Panama which we used to go check out that canal they make such a big deal about. It was pretty neat, although negotiating the price to get a ride there was confusing. We ended up paying $25 each for a guided tour (in spanish, so I didnīt understand a lot [View Full Entry]

We arrived on the 6th of May. Ecuador, new country, new continent! We stayed in the old part of the city which is full of churches apparently all built on top of the holy sites of the indigenous people to erradicate their beliefs and replace them with Christianity... The old city is very picturesque, we were particularly impressed by the virgin on top of the Panecillo Hill whose name we canīt remember, but we liked to call her the Angel with the Beast. Quito has some amazing vista points and we travelled to a few of them to get different panoramic [View Full Entry]
