A really enjoyable experience with much nature and wildlife to see. In San Cristobal they had built benches along the seafront so that you could sit and contempate the harbour. However, these were not always available as the seals would leave the ocean and use them to sunbathe (see photo 1).
Galapagos is the only place in the world where you can find a cactus that grows with a tree-like trunk (see photo 2).
The Galapagos is also well known for its bird life and I managed to photograph a pelican (see photo 3), and a bird in a tree that I was able to immediately identify as A Bird In A Tree (see photo 4). I was also fortunate enough to photograph a blue-footed booby (see photo 5). I can see why it is classified as a booby but the reason for the rest of its name escapes me.
The islands also abound with iguanas, both of the more common marine type (see photo 6) and the land type (see photo 7).
I also saw several giant tortoises (see photo 8). To give a sence of scale and to prove that they were indeed massive, and further that I had not mocked-up the photo in a local pet shop, I waited until one popped out of its shell to go for a coffee and then had myself photographed alongside its temporarily vacated 'home' (see photo 9). Tortoises are in fact red-blue colour blind and I managed to photograph one of the nearly extinct red crabs (see photo 10) that have almost been wiped out by tortoises eating them, mistaking them for blue-footed boobies.
Perhaps the most remarkable animal on the Galapagos Islands are the lobsters who have become so resigned to being caught and eaten that they will come out of the sea, cross the road to the restaurants, climb up onto your plate (see photo 11), and even point with their feelers to their personal favourite sauces and dressings.
