The plane touched down on Isla Baltra and we were offloaded onto the hot tarmac. A warm sea breeze hit us as we crossed to the newly renovated airport, and I nearly lost my latest hat acquired on this trip. It is made exclusively from coconut husk and wood glue and is unique enough to cut a dash (in my humble opinion) without looking like a wannabe Texas cowboy. The airport boasted at great length about its green stamp of approval for renewable energy technology, with wind turbines, manual conveyor belts and careful alignment with the prevailing winds to negate the need for air conditioning. It was nice and cool, but the wind turbines were stationary despite the strong breeze and the lack of baggage carousel caused a scramble for the bags as everyone wanted to ... read more

We have just got back from our 8 days cruise through the Galapagos Islands. Leading up to the cruise we researched a lot of websites and options, everything is so expensive! They keep the prices high to eliminate mass tourists, which would impact negatively on the nature. I emailed a company, which claimed the lowest prices guaranteed and was able to get quoted a much more reasonable price! And the flights from Rio (Brazil) to the Galapagos only where $500 – was a long journey though 30 hours of travel but we had meals and entertainment on every flight, which always helps! Surprisingly how good you can get at sleeping in airports., often I would fall asleep at around 3am and no one around and when my alarm goes off the whole airports full and people ... read more

Last post got deleted due to a sketchy Internet connection, so this is a condensed version. First we want to share that March 1 was not only a great day for us, but also a couple from Holland celebrated their 20th anniversary together and a couple from Germany got engaged that night on the boat. Cheers to them, they know who they are! Back on land we've been going with the Galapagos flow. We've hit all the beaches again... Diving in cool waters at las grietas, swimming at a local beach at the Darwin centre, and doing the 3km walk to tortuga bay. Tortuga bay is an amazing beach. Triple fun - one section made of calm warm water, another a cove, and then a surf beach. The sand feels like icing sugar under our feet ... read more

Well folks, On March 1st at sunset, on the ship Yolita 2, with a school of dolfins jumping beside the ship, and the sun setting over the equator, Rosalyn and I tied the knot! Now here´s the story. We were at a travel agency looking into taking a cruise to the more remote areas of Galapagos not reachable any other way when I asked the agent, Betty "I heard that you can be married here by a ships captain at sea, do you think we could do this?". Betty almost fainted, then screamed with excitment! She said she had never done this before, but thought it was possible. She quickly got on the phone, made several calls to the boat owner, captain, govenment, etc, and before you know it she had it arranged. She took our ... read more

Well Galapagos is truly an amazing place! This is our third day here, and so far the weather has been 31 and sunny every day. The owner of our hostel says its like this pretty much all year. There are only 20000 galapagos indigenous people left on the islands who are outnumbered 10x by iguanas, sea lions, and tortoises. The local people are very friendly and hard working. It is an amazingly safe place to visit which is really nice. There seems to be no boundaries between nature and humans here which is probably its greatest feature. It makes you realize how much we have screwed up our world. Here, thanks to strict regulation, the animals have little fear of humans, and due to the lack of development, humans haven't destoyed the animals natural habitat yet. ... read more

Geo: -0.744303, -90.3117We just got back to Quito from the Galapagos this evening and we leave for the Amazon early tomorrow morning. Not sure we're going to get a chance to write the final entry on our time on the islands until we re-emerge from the jungle... which we hope will be next weekend. Thought we'd at least share an image tonight of one of the faces from the last week we won't soon forget. Some narly eh?!... read more

Our morning was filled with another trip to Cafe Hernan followed by some bathing suit shopping, flight change and a visit to the bank so we could pay the rest of the cruise. And again I had way more cash in hand than I really wanted, but being in the Galapagos with it is not so bad. As we waited in line at the bank tour operators were walking in and depositing thousands and thousands of dollards (all in $20 bills) and others were withdrawing the same. Watching the bank tellers count out $5,000 in $20´s for one woman was so bizarre, especially when she turned, walked out the door and strolled down the street as if it were nothing. There is just so much money moving through the Galapagos and walking down the street with ... read more

The adventure continued this morning as we started the day off walking back towards the docks. We had some appointments with people on cruise stuff, but since we had some time we went in search of food. And to Sarah´s delight her every wish came true when we found pancakes! As a huge breakfast lover she has been in serious withdrawal on this trip and this was a welcome change. Needless to say, this restaurant became a mainstay for us with the pancakes, french toast, good coffee, fresh fruit and juice. As a non-breakfast person I can still say it was quite good, especially the freshly squeezed fruit juice. Afterwards we walked down to the pier. Overnight there was a lot of change in the cove with the number of boats. The water level had also ... read more
