Magique ! Après une ... read more

The Capital of Ecuador. There are two well known areas in Quito, the Old town, and go figure the New town! We chose to stay in the New Town. Its filled with bars, restaurants and American tourists. And a lot of locals. Fun fact about Ecuador, they use American Currency. The difference is they have coins instead of notes for $1, and they also have one coin for themselves which is 50cents. But apart from that, all American cash – strange! At the moment as some of you will know, the qualifying matches are being played for the World Cup. The main square near where we are staying has been soccer madness. Yesterday Ecuador was playing Argentina for a spot to Qualify, beers where being consumed (3 for $4) being 10am, and the main square full ... read more

Bandau eiti ta kryptimi kur maždaug turėtų būti tie griuvėsiai, bet neturiu gero žemėlapio, tad tiksli... read more

With my family winging their way back to the UK, my attention now turned to trying to summit arguably Ecuador's most famous peak – the perfect cone of the Cotopaxi volcano topping out at 5,897metres (for reference Kilamanjaro is a fraction smaller at 5,895m). Given that on my previous travels I had summitted a higher peak (Huayana Potosi at 6,092m) and therefore could appreciate just how tough the summit attempt would be, I prepared as well as I could – eschewing alcohol in the ten days leading up to the summit attempt and climbing three preparatory peaks in the days beforehand. Unfortunately, the weather during the preparation stages meant that each preparatory summit was shrouded in cloud – so I now have a rather nice collection of photos of me surrounded by a skyline reminiscent of ... read more

Detailed photos of plants encountered on tour with Jean + Don Marcelo. All are from elevation, aspects, and soils similar to Malingua Pamba (MP), and should be good targets for reforestation. Many are from disturbed ground on road cuts (pioneers) also riparian corridors which also see high turnover. Jean observes the need for more diversity in MP viveros (plant nurseries), especially shrubs and suggests we organize a competition in Malingua Pamba/Tunguiche/Guantugloma to promote diversity, with families recieving 100 planting bags each, have them collect locally, and offer prizes after 6 months for most diversity, best shrubs, best flowers, etc. Orchids might be better in cutout plastic coke bottles, here in Banos people collect orchids and stuff into nooks on old logs. Maybe this could be done at school. I will be interested in different planting mixes ... read more

המשכנו ... read more

Exploding lava bombs may have prevented us from getting to the summit of Sangay, but there are plenty of friendlier volcanos in Ecuador which can be climbed - or at least attempted. We've been quite keen on getting to the top of one of these ever since we drove past Cotopaxi on the Avenida de los Volcanes. Weather, highly unpredictable in the highlands, and acclimation to altitude, essential if we are to stand a hope of getting to one of the higher snowbound summits, are the major obstacles to a successful climb. After a couple of weeks in the highlands, and especially after spending five days in Parque Nacional Sangay at altitudes pushing 4,000 metres, acclimation shouldn't be too much of a problem now. Our climb to the central summit of Rumiñahui, a relatively modest 4,600 ... read more

Ok so I was having a little anxiety about my ability to make it all the way up to the glacier. My last ¨volcano¨ experience in Chile had been a bit traumatic. I had no problem making it up to the Refugio Jose Rivas at 4800m. It was an even, winding dirt path up to the refugio. I was the first in my group after the guide. When we got to the refugio we were served hot tea, salami and cheese sandwiches which tasted delicious! Then it was time to trek up to the glacier... There was a light snow flurry and path was much more steep and the ground much less firm. It was like climbing uphill on sand...kinda of tricky for me. This time I was in the middle of the pack and breathing ... read more

I apologize for the very long lapse since my last blog entry. I just finished my overland trip from Quito to Lima and it was full of incredible adventures! Since I am so far behind I will try to group my days together so I don{t have too many entries. This entry goes way back in time before I even met my overland group and I was in Quito on my own. August 3rd The hostel I was staying at, The Secret Garden, also has a branch near Cotopaxi so I spent one night there as my only opportunity to see the mountain. There was a bus from the Quito branch out to the Cotopaxi one and it was full of other single travelers as well which was fun. The hostel was a little group of ... read more
